INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL MEDIA & AI

Duration: 10 weeks

This 10-week introductory course is designed for adults who want to build confidence in using social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, while gaining a basic understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it can support content creation.

Students will explore how social media is used in everyday life, develop practical content creation skills, and discover how AI tools can enhance creativity, productivity, and online presence. The course is ideal for beginners with little or no prior experience, offering a supportive and hands-on learning environment.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Throughout the course, you will:

Week 1: Introduction to Social Media & AI 

  • What is Artificial Intelligence? (simple explanation)
  • Examples of AI in everyday apps
  • How people use social media today

Week 2: Getting Started with Instagram & TikTok

  • Creating and understanding profiles
  • Exploring the app interface
  • Types of content: posts, stories, reels, short videos
  • How people discover content

Week 3: Basic Content Creation Skills

  • Framing and camera basics
  • Lighting tips for beginners
  • Hooks: grabbing attention in the first seconds
  • Simple caption writing

Week 4: AI Tools for Content Creation 

  • Using AI for caption ideas
  • Generating images with AI
  • Using AI for brainstorming
  • Ethical use of AI in content

Week 5: Instagram Features & Best Practices 

  • Reels and visual storytelling
  • Hashtags and discoverability
  • Highlights and profile presentation
  • Consistency in posting

Week 6: TikTok Creativity & Trends

  • Understanding TikTok trends
  • Sounds and music
  • Duets and stitches
  • Simple editing techniques

 Week 7: Algorithims & The For You Feed 

  • What is an algorithm?
  • How feeds decide what to show
  • Engagement signals (likes, comments, watch time)
  • Why some posts go viral

Week 8: Influencers & Personal Branding 

  • What is a personal brand?
  • How influencers grow audiences
  • Finding your niche
  • Authenticity online

Week 9: Analytics & Growth 

  • Understanding engagement metrics
  • Using insights dashboards
  • Learning from performance
  • Setting simple growth goals

Week 10: Final Project & Reflection 

  • Students present their projects
  • Discuss lessons learned
  • Responsible digital behaviour
  • Building a simple portfolio

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This course is assessed through continuous, informal assessment rather than exams.

Assessment methods include:

  • Participation in weekly practical activities
  • Creation of social media content plans and ideas
  • Use of AI tools for simple tasks
  • Tutor feedback and peer discussion

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On completion of this course you could progress onto further digital skills courses, or other adult courses available at Preston College that may be of interest. 

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

This course is ideal if you are looking for a practical and interactive introduction to digital media and AI, with opportunities to work independently and as part of a group. No prior experience is required as everything on this course will start at a beginners level. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

However, students should:

  • Have basic digital skills (e.g. using a smartphone or computer) or be working towards a Level 1 qualification in Digital Skills 
  • Have an interest in social media, content creation, or digital skills
  • Be willing to participate in practical activities and group discussions
