INTRODUCTION TO HAIR AND BEAUTY SKILLS - LEVEL 1 DIPLOMA

This course is ideal for those with an interest in both hairdressing and beauty, looking to gain an overview of both industries, alongside key techniques and skills. Covering a range of modules, preparing all learners for employment in this fast paced industry, successful completion of this course will allow you to decide which route you would like to specialise in and progress onto the Level 2 Hairdressing or Level 2 Beauty Therapy course at Preston’s College, if you wish.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of the Introduction to Hair and Beauty Level 1 course you will study a range of modules, including:

  • Shampooing
  • Blow drying
  • Winding
  • Temporary colours
  • Retail displays
  • Plaiting
  • Skin care
  • Manicure
  • Nail art
  • Basic makeup
  • Product promotion

All modules are designed to help you to develop the essential skills needed for success in industry, with the course providing a perfect introduction to the hair and beauty sector for those unsure of which route they would like to pursue. 

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

As a hair and beauty therapy learner at Preston’s College, you will perfect your skills in our on-site bespoke salon, Elements and additional training facilities. Elements is home to a fully furnished beauty salon, containing 11 treatment beds, a hair salon and demonstration workshop, where you will perfect your skills on your fellow learners.

Paying customers and models will be used for hairdressing assessments.

You will spend 50% of your time in the classroom and 50% undertaking practical work. When studying a beauty block, typically one hour of each session will be spent on theory and the rest of the session will be practical work.

To successfully pass the course you must complete and pass 13 written assignments, which are undertaken during theory sessions and a mixture of 13 hair and beauty practical assessments.

Beyond the classroom and training environment you will have the opportunity to attend trips to Blackpool Hair Show and Wella and will be given opportunities to hear from guest speakers. The course also involves participation in competitions, including Preston’s College ‘Create an Image’ showcase.

As our on-site facilities reflect industry working practices, you will be required to purchase and wear a black uniform. All uniform can be purchased through Preston’s College, once you begin your course.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress onto the Level 2 Hairdressing or Level 2 Beauty Therapy course at Preston’s College, if you wish.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

In order to develop your technical skills, you will be required to purchase professional equipment, relevant to the course. Depending upon your personal circumstances, this may be fundable through the college bursary. The kit will comprise of essential beauty tools, products and a uniform. More information will be provided to you on your first day.
