This course aims to introduce you to a range of fundamental principles and techniques in furniture making, furnishing and wood machining, with a specific focus on making and upholstering your own ottoman.

The course is ideal for adults wishing to learn new skills and techniques for either personal use or for entry into a career in this popular field, focusing on furniture, furnishings and wood machining.

Studied as a one week, intensive programme this course will be taught from purpose built workshops in our newly renovated Construction Skills Centre.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Throughout the programme, you will study a range of modules, including:

  • Finishing methods in upholstery and soft furnishings
  • Health and Safety within furniture and furniture making environments
  • Materials in furniture making and furnishings
  • Preparation and finishing methods in furniture making
  • Tools and equipment in furniture making and furnishings

The qualification will allow you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment in the sector, career progression within the industry or for home DIY and personal use.

Studied as a one-week intensive programme, the course will allow you to create your own ottoman, whilst exploring key principles within each of the modules listed above.

To achieve the full certificate, you must complete and achieve all modules.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught in our purpose built, newly renovated Construction Skills Centre, where you will have access to a range of materials, workshop spaces and expert tuition from industry experienced tutors.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment methods vary from module to module and take place via a range of methods, which may include the completion of internal assessments, photographic evidence, reflective logs, completion of practical tasks and questioning.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On completion of this qualification you will have obtained the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress in the furniture making industry, typically employed as a furniture maker, polisher, restorer, installer or soft furnishing specialist.

You may also choose to further your studies at Level 2 and beyond.
