The HNC Applied Biology, awarded by Pearson, can be studied on a full or part-time basis and provides an in-depth understanding of how organisms work. The course aims to give those with an interest in biological sciences the practical and theoretical skills needed to progress in industry, developing technical competencies through a number of hands-on activities and experiments and the study of a selection of compulsory and optional units.

Studying in the state-of-the-art iSTEM facility, you will take a hands-on approach to learning, combining practical work with theory-based assignments. Modules studied range from Cell Biology and Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways, to optional choices, including Medical Microbiology and Biodiversity.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught on campus, in our purpose built, i-STEM facility, allowing you to take a hands-on approach to learning, as the course combines practical work with theory based assignments. Taught by industry experienced lecturers, with a curriculum designed to fit current economic needs, the small class sizes allow for regular lecturer contact time.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

All learners on the HNC Applied Biology will experience a variety of assessment methods, including both written and practical tasks. Specific examples include presentations, essays, reports, in-class tests and practical projects.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Upon successful completion of the HNC, you may choose to progress onto a relevant HND or undergraduate degree at university. Successful completion of the HNC will provide you with a strong skillset to enter employment in a range of industries, or progress within your chosen area of science. To progress onto higher level study, an additional application needs to be made.

Tuition Fee: Full time (1 year) Year 1 (2020/21): £6,000
Part-time (2 years) Year 1 (2020/21): £3,000, Year 2 (2021/22): £3,000

Additional costs: You will be required to purchase a lab coat and safety glasses for practical work at a cost of £20 and will also need a scientific
calculator.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Preston’s College operates a flexible admissions policy, welcoming applicants with a wide range of qualifications and/or experience, with each application assessed on its own merit. We also recognise prior learning/attainment (RPL) and experience, meaning it may be possible to map some of your existing qualifications against the modules for the HNC Applied biology qualification.


If this applies to you, we will discuss this with you at the interview stage.

For students who have recently been in education, we would expect an applicant to have one of the following:

A-Levels: At least one A-Level in an appropriate subject (equivalent to 32 UCAS points)

BTEC Extended Diploma (or equivalent):

Level 3 in Applied Science or similar discipline at PPP or higher
BTEC Diploma (or equivalent): Level 3 in Applied Science or similar discipline at PP or higher
Pass Access Course: Access to Higher Education Diploma in a related discipline at Level 3
International Baccalaureate: H5 = 32 UCAS points
Other qualifications or requirements: An NVQ diploma or equivalent competence qualifcation.
Those with relevant employment experience will be considered on a case by case basis for the course.
Plus  
GCSE: Maths (grade C/grade 4) and English (grade C/grade 4) or above. (Level 2 English and Maths will be considered if supported by industry experience) A Science related subject at grade C/grade 4 is also required at grade C/grade 4.
Other qualifications: IELTS 6.0 (with 5.5 in each skills area)

We usually consider an A-level in General Studies as a supplementary qualification.

A good application will be taken into account, if you do not meet the above criteria.
