This HND aims to provide you with the skills needed to solve significant and unpredictable engineering problems in a host of industries. Building upon knowledge gained at HNC level, the programme allows you to explore the skills needed to design, analyse and optimise mechanical systems to a higher level.
You will study five modules as part of your programme, investigating a range of subjects including design and manufacture, thermofluids, mechanics, kinematics and materials.
Taught within our state-of the-art iSTEM Centre, offering outstanding teaching facilities, design suites, CAD/CAM software and a 3D printing lab, the programme has been designed with employers in mind, with successful completion providing opportunities to progress onto level 6 of the BEng (Hons) at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Throughout your time on the HND you will study 120 credits at level 5, comprising of five compulsory modules:
Design and Manufacture
Mechanics, Kinematics and Materials
Operations Management A
Computer Aided Design and Simulation
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?
You will be taught using a range of teaching and learning methods, including traditional lectures, tutorials and group work. You can also expect to undertake elements of directed study and practical, workshop sessions. Teaching methods will vary from module to module, best reflecting the content of the module being studied.

If this applies to you, we will discuss this with you at the interview stage.
For students who have recently been in education, we would expect an applicant to have one of the following:
Level 4 qualification:
A Level 4 qualification in a relevant subject, such as HNC Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
The HNC shown on this website allows for direct progression onto this HND. Applicants with an alternate HNC may be considered, depending on modules completed.
Other qualifications or requirements:
An NVQ diploma or equivalent competence based qualification.
Applicants with industrial experience will be considered on a case by case basis for the course.
IELTS 6.0 (with 5.5 in each skills area).
English and Maths GCSE grade 4 (formerly grade C) or equivalent.
We usually consider an A-level in General Studies as a supplementary qualification.
