This qualification is ideal for those seeking a career as a make-up artist working with performers to a high level of occupational ability, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Mandatory units may include: health and safety practice; client care and communication; airbrush make-up to the face; camouflage make-up; media make-up; fashion and photographic make-up; style and fit postiche and the application of prosthetic pieces and bald caps.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught by industry trained tutors through theory and practical sessions. In theory you will develop your understanding of the industry and the skills you need to be a session stylist. In practical sessions you will experience live shoots and practice your skills for exhibiting your work.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed in a real or realistic working environment. You will be expected to provide some of your own clients and complete tasks to commercial time scales. Assessments include: Practical Client Assessments; Portfolio of Evidence; Practical Tasks; Oral Questioning; Written Tests; Assignments; and Online Tests.

HOW MUCH WILL THIS COURSE COST?

You will have the opportunity to experience guest stylist demonstrations, access trips to museums and exhibitions. As part of your course you will be expected to complete a nominated number of hours of work experience which will be agreed during the induction period.

This course involves using chemicals, liquids and aerosols which could be harmful to your health if you have a predisposition to certain skin conditions or allergies, such as occupational dermatitis, eczema or asthma. You will need a uniform (approximately £50) and a kit (approximately £600).

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

Completion of this qualification allows you to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC). You could seek employment in the industry or progress to university programmes.

Career opportunities exist in a variety of contexts including: Self-employed or Employed Professional make-up artistry; Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios; Beauty and/or hair salons; Product manufacturing and training; and Hospitals/care homes.

This qualification is based on hairdressing and beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's lead beauty therapy professional association (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology - BABTAC).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need a Level 2 in Theatrical Make up, hair or beauty qualification and English or Maths at grade 4 or above.
