This is a technical level qualification aimed at developing the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career as a sports massage therapist, either employed or self-employed, working in a pre, post, intra and maintenance context, with non-pathological tissue. You’ll learn how to develop strategies for treatments covering planning, preparation, application and evaluation stages.

What will I learn?

You will study the theory underpinning the practice of sports massage therapy, including functional anatomy and physiology, nutrition, classification of sports injuries and the stages of healing. Alongside your theory you’ll develop skills and techniques in a range of sports massage methods for uninjured clients and evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform your future practice.

How will I be taught?

You will have a mixture of theory and practical sessions – developing your knowledge and putting it into practice! There is also additional work and practice to be completed outside of college. Whilst in college you’ll have the opportunity to work with ‘real’ clients in our Sports Massage Clinics held in the iSTEM Centre.

How will I be assessed?

  • One externally set written examination.
  • Completion of sports massage portfolio tasks. For example observed work, written questions, case studies, assignments.
  • Evidence of completing 50 hours of sports massage on non-injured clients.

What can I do next?

Successful completion of this qualification allows you to either gain employment or set up your own business as you can also obtain insurance to work as a sports massage therapist in a pre, post, intra and maintenance context, dealing with non-pathological tissue. After completing this course you may be able to progress onto the Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage.

Is there anything else I need to know?

This course is available as both an evening course and a daytime course.
