I have been fully supported throughout my whole apprenticeship from start to finish. I feel like i’ve learnt so much since my first day working at Bonney’s. From working on my own and in a team i always felt confident in what i was doing. I have done such a range of different things during my apprenticeship and never felt in doubt that i wouldn’t be able to do it with the support from all of my colleagues. I have enjoyed my apprenticeship and look forward to keep working with the team.

I would like to nominate Briarwood Medical Centre in recognition of their outstanding commitment to apprenticeships and their proactive approach to developing skilled, confident, and professional staff. This was their first apprentice, and the practice has embraced the apprenticeship programme with dedication and enthusiasm. They recognise that apprenticeships are not just a way to fill a role, but a meaningful opportunity to support individuals in building a long-term career in healthcare. General practice depends on skilled, committed staff, and Briarwood has shown a clear understanding of this by providing apprentices with a real working environment in which they can develop their skills while contributing meaningfully to the needs of the practice. Apprentices are welcomed as integral members of the team, bringing energy, fresh ideas, and a genuine willingness to learn, all of which are highly valued by staff and patients alike.
Briarwood demonstrates an exceptional focus on supporting apprentices’ learning and wellbeing. They ensure apprentices have dedicated time to complete their studies and coursework, with regular check-ins to monitor progress and provide guidance. Open communication is actively encouraged, creating an environment in which apprentices feel confident to ask questions, seek advice, or raise concerns at any time. This approach has helped apprentices feel supported, integrated, and valued, which is especially important in a healthcare setting where the workload can be demanding and the responsibilities significant. Apprentices are also provided with a sense of purpose and belonging within the team, helping them develop confidence and resilience in both professional and personal contexts.
Beyond the standard apprenticeship requirements, Briarwood goes above and beyond to provide additional mentoring and training. Apprentices receive regular one-to-one supervision, guidance, and encouragement to gain experience across different areas of the practice, giving them a full understanding of how primary care operates on a daily basis. There is a strong focus on developing essential professional skills, including communication, patient interaction, confidence, and professionalism. This holistic approach ensures apprentices not only complete their qualifications but also gain the interpersonal and practical skills needed to thrive in a healthcare career.
Additionally, Briarwood actively supports apprentices’ wellbeing by providing access to resources such as the Employee Assistance Programme, NHS Health Checks, financial guidance, and opportunities to participate in company social events. This demonstrates a genuine commitment to the overall welfare of their apprentices, ensuring they are well-supported both in the workplace and personally.
Overall, Briarwood Medical Centre exemplifies what an employer can achieve through an apprenticeship programme. Their structured support, commitment to wellbeing, professional mentoring, and inclusive approach create a learning environment where apprentices can flourish, grow in confidence, and develop long-term careers in healthcare. Their dedication to nurturing talent, combined with the positive impact apprentices have on the practice, makes Briarwood a highly deserving nominee for employer recognition.

Despite initially having little understanding of what T‑Levels would involve, Delta Fire embraced the programme wholeheartedly and quickly became an exemplary employer partner.
Their dedication is evident in the way they go above and beyond for our learners. They have taken the time to visit the college, share their expertise, and engage directly with staff and students to strengthen understanding of industry expectations. Electropak Ltd exemplifies how apprenticeships can be strategically used to onboard, develop, and retain exceptional talent. As a precision engineering company, they have consistently demonstrated a commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and workforce development—values clearly reflected in their apprenticeship programme and in Alfie’s impressive progression.
Initially recruited as a Level 2 Engineering Operative apprentice, Alfie gained essential foundation skills in a safety‑critical industry. Electropak then supported his advancement to a Level 3 Engineering apprenticeship and has since enrolled him onto a Level 4 apprenticeship with an HNC. This clear, structured pathway shows Electropak’s dedication to developing staff beyond semi‑skilled roles and towards advanced technical capability.
Their investment highlights what defines an exceptional employer:
A strategic, long‑term approach to workforce development
Strong commitment to progression through multiple apprenticeship levels
High‑quality training supported by extensive in‑house expertise

Gemma Whewell-House of Soul is being nominated for the Exceptional Employer Award in recognition of her outstanding commitment to supporting apprenticeships from the very beginning of their journey and as a new apprenticeship provider. Despite being new to the programme, Gemma has demonstrated a level of dedication, preparation, and care that exceeds expectations and sets a high standard for employers across the sector.
From the outset, Gemma has shown a deep understanding of the value apprenticeships bring—not only in developing new talent, but in strengthening the wider industry. Gemma’s investment and significant time ensured a smooth and meaningful induction for the apprentice, providing structured learning opportunities, hands-on experience, and regular mentoring. Gemma’s on-board process reflects a genuine commitment to nurturing potential and helping individuals grow both personally and professionally.
What truly sets House of Soul apart is their proactive and supportive approach. They have created an inclusive environment where their apprentice feels empowered, respected, and encouraged to develop new skills. Gemma has taken great care to tailor workloads and learning experiences to match the apprentice’s strengths and goals, while ensuring they are continually challenged and engaged. Gemma’s communication with Preston College and work-based Tutor has also been exemplary—consistent, transparent, and always focused on achieving the best outcomes for the apprentice.
Even as a new apprenticeship employer, Gemma has already embedded a culture of learning within the organisation. Gemma’s team members have embraced their roles as mentors, providing constructive feedback, guidance, and encouragement at every stage. By prioritising training and professional development, they have created a supportive workplace where apprentices can thrive, build confidence, and contribute fully to the team.
The positive impact of Gemma’s commitment is already clear. Their apprentice has made rapid progress and speaks highly of the support, patience, and opportunities offered. House of Soul (Gemma) has demonstrated that being new to apprenticeships is no barrier to excellence; instead, they have set a benchmark in how to welcome, develop, and champion emerging talent.
For their exceptional dedication, enthusiasm, and genuine investment in the future of their apprentice, Gemma from the House of Soul is truly deserving of recognition.
From the apprentice:
Being made redundant and lost in February last year, to being at House of Soul with Gemma a couple weeks later is truly amazing. Gemma has took me under her wing and gave me constant support and mentorship throughout my Level 3. She carries an amazing positive energy which she radiates onto everyone and everything around her. Not only this, in the time I’ve started she’s opened up a whole other studio in Feniscowles, Blackburn, whilist running the main studio and providing guidance to all around her. She’s an inspiration to all, further providing her business skills and knowledge too. She hasn’t had an apprentice before, but you would never think different, she is truly special and deserves this nomination. Thank you Gemma

Mick and his team at J&M Morgan now have 3 apprentices at Preston College, these being, James Brierley, Joshua Iddon, and Lewis Parkinson. Mick always makes time in his very busy schedule to discuss the apprentices progress in detail at our reviews. He takes time to understand what is needed to make apprenticeships work, and how to support his apprentices in order to help them to succeed.
I would like to nominate James for this award because he is an excellent example of what an employer should be when supporting and developing their apprentices. James has been in the hairdressing industry for many years and has built a strong reputation for both his technical skill and his professional standards. Wanting to give something back to the industry, he decided to take on a new apprentice and has shown exceptional commitment from day one. His apprentice Monica is advancing quickly in both her practical skills and knowledge and his going to make a great hairdresser under James’ guidance.
Jasmine is a great example of how apprenticeships work in the hair and beauty industry and how success can be achieved. As a former apprentice, Jasmine completed the hairdressing professional level 2 with Preston College from 20219-2021, continuing you on to the level 3 as a adult student the following year. Since qualifying, she has gone on to open her beautiful new salon in Goosnagh. She quickly decided that she wanted to take on her first apprentice and was really keen to support someone starting their career in this industry. From my first visit to the salon, I knew she would make a fantastic employer, asking how the process worked and what she needed to do to make this a success for everyone involved.
Jasmine worked with me over the summer last year, to arrange interviews and trials with candidates, ensuring that they experienced a realistic day in the salon. She even allowed them to bring in a client to undertake a shampoo and blow dry, with guidance allowing them to experience how salon life would be.
On recruiting Emily, she always gives clear guidance, hands on training in a genuinely supportive environment. She shows real commitment to Emily’s development by setting aside time to go through theory work and strengthening Emily’s knowledge in preparation for her exams. Jasmine encourages Emily to ask questions and practice her recall of information to help build her confidence. She gives thorough practical training and allows Emily the time and opportunity to bring in clients to practice these skills in real salon situations.
Jasmine’s journey from apprentice to salon owner and now employer is inspiring and I believe she is a worthy winner of this award 😊
JFNIS has been an outstanding apprenticeship partner, demonstrating long‑term commitment to developing talent and supporting high‑quality learning. I have worked directly with JFNIS and Louise Stephens since 2021, forming a strong and productive collaboration built on clear communication, consistency, and genuine investment in apprentices’ success.
Louise plays a crucial role in coordinating and mentoring the apprentices. She is always approachable, supportive, and proactive—ensuring learners have the guidance, structure, and encouragement they need to thrive. Her involvement has been central to maintaining a smooth and well‑organised apprenticeship journey for every learner.
JFNIS recognises the value apprenticeships bring to both individuals and the business. Their continued dedication, professionalism, and learner‑centred approach make them fully deserving of this award.
“I am nominating Ms Jane not just because she was kind to me, but because she took me in and mentored me as one of her staff. I was included, patiently taught, and carefully corrected. She taught me that it is okay to make mistakes, and even when I made simple mistakes and felt scared to try again, she encouraged me by giving me the tasks to practise over and over until I mastered them.
She asked for my opinion when addressing situations, and even when I felt I had nothing to say, it made me happy to be included. Looking back, I realise now how much that meant. I felt completely safe and always happy to go to Finney House Day Centre. This was because of the comfortable and safe environment she and her staff created for me.
I didn’t just feel seen — I felt truly heard, valued, and included in a place where my opinion mattered. During my community placement with her, I learned many things and gained practical experience that I never believed I could do due to my extreme antisocial behaviour. She helped me in ways I can’t fully put into words, especially with my confidence and communication skills.
I just want to use this opportunity to properly thank her for the opportunities she, her staff, the residents, and Finney Day Centre gave me. I truly appreciate everything, and I want her to know that I am forever grateful. It was an honour working with her.”
Lee Kelly UPVC Windows Ltd is a highly supportive, family run business based here in Preston that has shown outstanding commitment to apprenticeship development. We began working with them in October 2023 when they took on their first apprentice, Harvey Brindle, who completed his Level 2 Customer Service apprenticeship and has since progressed onto Level 3. The company has since expanded its support by taking on an additional Level 2 apprentice.
They provide a nurturing environment where apprentices are encouraged to build their confidence, skills, and knowledge through meaningful, hands on experience shared down from Chris and Dan.
Lee Kelly UPVC works closely with Preston College, communicates effectively, and ensures apprentices have the time, guidance, and opportunities they need to succeed. Their dedication to developing young talent makes them an exemplary apprenticeship employer.
Loops Direct are an exceptional employer, they currently have business administration apprentices and support them throughout their apprenticeship, training them on all aspects of the business giving them great insight into business and the various processes.
The recent apprentice to complete Katie Dearden completed her project and the company are using her improvement project within the company which is a great achievement for both the apprentice and employer.
To add to this amazing inclusive employer, Dom the operations manager has agreed to have one of our interim learners for work experience and to support them in the workplace for the next few months. Dom always says he likes to give everyone a chance to work and help all people.
From Katie:
I am nominating Dominic Jones for Preston College’s Exceptional Employer Award because he has genuinely changed the direction of my career and confidence, while creating an apprenticeship experience that was structured, supportive and centred on my long-term development. When I joined LoopsDirect straight from school, I was extremely shy and lacked confidence, especially in customer-facing situations. The idea of speaking to a customer on the phone genuinely terrified me. Dom didn’t just “manage” me, he mentored me. He broke tasks down into manageable steps, practised calls with me, gave me prompts, and role-played difficult conversations until I felt capable. He praised effort, not perfection, and made sure any mistakes became learning moments rather than something to feel embarrassed about.
From the very beginning, Dom treated my apprenticeship like it mattered, not just extra help. He set out a clear roadmap of what I would learn, what “great” looks like, and how I could progress. We have regular check-ins where we review goals, reflect on what went well, and agree practical next steps. That structure has been the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling supported. With Dom’s help, I have grown into a confident young woman who now deals with multiple key stakeholders and supports vital projects that affect day-to-day operations. Dom has spent significant time expanding my technical and professional skills. From using spreadsheets and systems accurately, to improving written communication, prioritising workload, and understanding how operational decisions impact customers and colleagues. He regularly goes out of his way, and often outside of normal working hours, to help me learn, reflect and improve.
What makes Dom exceptional is the environment he creates to learn. I can confide in him without judgement, ask basic questions and be honest when I’m struggling. He is incredibly understanding, patient and consistent and he never makes me feel like I’m not a priority, even with the pressures of being Head of Operations. He sets clear expectations and then backs them up with coaching, feedback and opportunities to take ownership, so I always know how to progress.
Dom is also mentoring another apprentice through the Preston College apprenticeship scheme and has mentored several apprentices over the years, including in warehousing and admin roles. He makes sure apprentices are included, listened to and trusted with meaningful work, not just repetitive tasks. He leads by example in professionalism, integrity and accountability, and his support is felt across the wider team. Dom is also a previous Preston College apprentice himself, which gives him a real understanding of what apprentices need to succeed, especially confidence, guidance and practical opportunities, not just classroom learning. He is passionate about helping young people build strong careers locally, and he proves that through the time and energy he invests.
Dom’s impact goes beyond training me for a job; he is helping me build a career. He has shown me what great leadership looks like: investing time in people, celebrating progress, and building a culture where learning is normal and support is consistent. For these reasons, I cannot think of anyone more deserving of the Exceptional Employer Award than Dom.
“I’d like to nominate Liam Robinson, Owner of the construction business LRC projects (north west) ltd , for the Employer Award 2026 at Preston College.
Liam is a great employer who genuinely looks after his team. He always takes the time to explain things properly, helps people learn on the job, and makes sure work is done safely and to a good standard. He’s easy to talk to, leads by example, and creates a positive working environment.
He’s especially supportive of people who are still learning or starting out in the trade, helping them build confidence and real skills. Because of this, Liam fully deserves to be recognised with this award.”
Mark has been working with the college for 2 years now, since taking the plunge to go self-employed and start his own business. Since Mark initially contacted the college for advice/guidance, he has placed great emphasis on using Apprentices to boost his business and offers significant training and experience across a whole range of trades. His Apprentices always give great feedback about working for Mark and I have to say he is always a pleasure to work with. I have recently spoken to other businesses in Chorley, who have worked with Mark and they all have nothing but great things to say about him. I don’t think there’s greater praise than saying I would recommend any Apprentices to work for him!
I am delighted to nominate Merlin Diesel Systems for recognition as an outstanding employer and exemplary partner to Preston College. Their commitment to developing the emerging workforce, strengthening industry–education partnerships, and supporting apprentices across engineering and business disciplines is consistently evident and deeply valued.
Merlin Diesel has established exceptionally strong and proactive links with Preston College. Their team frequently participates in Industry Insight days, apprenticeship events, and employer engagement activities, ensuring students gain direct exposure to real workplace expectations, technologies, and career pathways. By being visible, accessible, and genuinely engaged with learners, Merlin Diesel provides students with invaluable opportunities to connect classroom learning with industry practice.
The company’s approach to apprenticeship development is particularly impressive. Merlin Diesel supports both engineering and business apprentices with a structure that prioritises guided learning, skill progression, and wellbeing. They work collaboratively with Preston College to ensure every apprentice receives meaningful mentoring, high‑quality training, and regular progress monitoring. This shared commitment helps apprentices stay on track, grow in confidence, and succeed in their chosen careers.
What sets Merlin Diesel apart is their consistency: they show up, they contribute, and they invest in young people. Their engagement is not a one‑off gesture but an ongoing, authentic partnership that strengthens the local skills pipeline and inspires future talent.
For their dedication to workforce development, their outstanding collaboration with Preston College, and their unwavering support for apprentices, Merlin Diesel Systems is truly deserving of recognition as an exceptional employer.
I am nominating Millennium Engineering because they have been absolutely outstanding in their support of Preston College and our Engineering T Level students. Jamie, who I work with directly, has been exceptional. He is consistently prepared to help, offer opportunities, and go above and beyond for our learners. This commitment was especially evident when Millennium Engineering and Jamie agreed to take part in our T Level promotional video, which proved to be a great success.
Despite engineering placements being notoriously difficult to secure due to the nature of the industry, Millennium Engineering continues to provide invaluable placement opportunities for our students. Without companies like theirs, our learners simply would not gain the real‑world experience needed to develop their skills and understanding while completing their T Level qualification. Jamie has also recommended other employers who have since come on board after hearing the positive outcomes, further strengthening our network of industry partners.
Several students have completed placements at Millennium under Jamie’s guidance, and the feedback has always been extremely positive. One student, Jack, progressed from a placement to employment with the company. Although he was offered an apprenticeship, he chose to pursue direct employment—an outcome that reflects the quality of support, mentorship, and experience provided by Jamie and the team.
I cannot overstate how important companies like Millennium Engineering—and dedicated managers like Jamie—are to the success of our T Level programme and the progression of our students. Their commitment makes a genuine and lasting impact on young people’s futures.
Kenyon’s dental practices commitment to training dental nurses is outstanding, to date they have trained and employed 35 dental nurse apprentices since 2019. They are a family run practice based in Lytham and employ apprentices every year, they train the apprentices to an exceptional standard ensuring they are equipped with all the knowledge, skills and behaviours for them to work in the industry once qualified. Suzanne is supportive of all apprentices, monitoring all the progress throughout the programme and supporting individually with their needs.
North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust is a highly deserving nominee in recognition of its positive engagement and commitment to supporting apprentices in partnership with Preston College. Although the Trust has not worked with Preston College for a long period of time in relation to apprenticeships, the strength of the relationship and the quality of support provided has been exceptionally positive. The staff within North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust are highly supportive of their apprentices and consistently demonstrate a strong and professional attitude towards apprenticeship development. Apprentices benefit from effective mentoring, clear guidance, and encouragement, which enables them to develop both technically and professionally within a demanding operational environment. Workshop managers are always welcoming and proactive in supporting apprentice reviews and visits. They willingly give their valuable time to discuss progress, provide constructive feedback, and ensure apprentices receive excellent levels of support. This open and collaborative approach greatly enhances the apprentice experience and supports successful outcomes.
Overall, North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust has demonstrated best practice in employer engagement and apprentice support. The commitment shown by staff and managers provides a strong foundation for a successful and long-lasting partnership with Preston College, and it is hoped that this positive relationship will continue for many years to come.
Pears roofing is an exceptional employer, recruiting apprentices year on year and supporting the apprentices to complete their apprenticeship standard with a high level of knowledge, skills and behaviours on completion of the gateway and EPA.
The company engaged with college in March 2025 and to date they have 9 apprentices with 3 of them completed. As the company is based in Blackpool the apprentices have to travel to Preston weekly. To assist them with finances, Pears pay all the expenses to and from college, they are all teamed up with an individual roofer/mentor to ensure they receive maximum training daily. Pears roofing are a family run business and have been for over 35 years and apprentices are core investment to their company and to the future proofing of the roofing industry.
Persimmon Homes have been brilliant in supporting one of our construction students, giving him an excellent opportunity to experience a wide range of construction activities and gain insight into different aspects of the industry. They have been incredibly flexible in tailoring the placement to meet the learner’s individual needs, ensuring he receives meaningful, relevant, and hands‑on experience that supports his development.
Their willingness to adapt, involve the student in real projects, and share their industry expertise has made a significant impact on his confidence and progression. Partnerships like this are invaluable in helping our learners build the skills and understanding they need to succeed in the construction sector.
Nigel is the best overall apprentice manager he is helpful and you can trust him with any problems.
Emily was on placement for her T Level and the nursery supported and helped Emily achieve her T Level. I have nominated Umar at Preston Pharmacy for his outstanding support of our apprentices. He consistently collaborates effectively with college tutors and ensures that meetings and observations are well facilitated. Umar is continually teaching our apprentices with professionalism and provides them with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in community pharmacy.
Despite overseeing six or more apprentices, he dedicates individual time and attention to each one, supporting their development and helping to shape them into confident future pharmacy professionals.
Ever since I joined Sika as an apprentice, they have took great care with me in helping me learn and progress as an engineer by providing me with the correct tools, equipment and team around me to give me the confidence and skills to become a fully qualified engineer.
South Ribble Borough Council provides an exceptional apprenticeship experience, shaped and strengthened through Portia’s leadership. Portia began her own professional journey as a Professional Construction apprentice here at Preston College, where she achieved a Distinction at Level 4. Her progression from apprentice to Strategic Development Officer clearly demonstrates both the strength of the apprenticeship pathway and the calibre of professional she has become.
Since completing her apprenticeship, Portia has progressed into a key strategic role at South Ribble Borough Council, where she leads and contributes to the delivery of multi million pound regeneration and development projects. She manages complex stakeholder relationships, oversees significant financial investment and leads multidisciplinary teams to deliver meaningful outcomes for the local community.
Now in a position of leadership, Portia is an outstanding employer and mentor to our current cohort of Level 4 Professional Construction apprentices. As a line manager, she provides structured guidance, sets clear expectations and gives apprentices genuine responsibility within the organisation. She ensures they are fully integrated into live projects, with exposure to planning processes, procurement and strategic development discussions. Apprentices are not simply observing, they are contributing.
Portia is proactive and fully engaged in their development. She meets regularly with apprentices to review progress, set clear development goals and provide constructive feedback. She understands the professional standards required within the sector and supports apprentices in developing not only technical competence, but also the professional behaviours, confidence and accountability needed to succeed in senior roles.
Importantly, Portia actively champions apprenticeships within the council. She advocates for investment in emerging talent, demonstrates the value apprentices bring to major projects and promotes apprenticeships as a credible and high quality route into professional construction careers.
From the apprentice:
I would like to nominate my line manager Portia for this award because she inspired me to enrol on this course, having successfully completed the qualification herself. Her support and proactive approach have been invaluable, and she has played a significant role in my personal and professional growth. Since completing the course, Portia has gone on to university and is now working towards her chartership, continuing to push herself and lead by example.
