Rebuilding a Future Through Adult Education

When war forced Iryna to leave her home in Ukraine, she arrived in the UK with the daunting task of rebuilding her life in a new country, learning a new language, finding work, and becoming part of a new society.

Determined to create new opportunities, Iryna enrolled on an ESOL course at Preston College. Over the next four years, she developed her English skills, grew in confidence and discovered a new path towards the career she had always wanted.

For Iryna, learning English was more than just mastering a language – it was about feeling included, being understood, and opening doors to employment. Today, she is studying Digital Bookkeeping and the AAT Accounting Level 2 Certificate, building on the accountancy experience she gained in Ukraine and preparing for a career in the UK accounting sector. She also hopes to gain valuable workplace experience through volunteering while continuing her studies.

Reflecting on her journey, Iryna said:

“Preston College has supported me in every way, from the wonderful teachers to the learning resources. I chose Preston College because friends recommended it, and now I understand why. It has given me the confidence to rebuild my life and work towards the career I have always wanted.”
