School of Construction & the Built Environment
Some students come in, do what’s required, and move on. Others really take hold of the opportunity, push themselves, and set the standard for everyone around them. Max Brooks is firmly in that second group, and I am proud to nominate him for Construction Student of the Year. Max started with us in 2023 as a School Links student from St Michael’s School in Chorley. From early on, it was clear he had potential. He worked hard, achieved high marks, and made the step up onto the full-time Level 1 Bricklaying course. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of teaching him for three years, and the progress he has made -not just in skill, but in maturity and attitude -has been excellent to see.
Max’s work ethic is one of his strongest qualities. He comes into sessions ready to work, gets stuck in straight away, and doesn’t shy away from challenges. Whether it’s theory or practical, he applies himself properly and takes pride in doing things to a high standard. This year, he has completed all of his coursework with strong results, showing consistency and a good understanding of the work. In the workshop, Max has really pushed himself to improve his hand skills. He doesn’t settle for “good enough”- he wants to get things right. He listens to feedback, takes his time, and works to improve his accuracy, finish, and overall quality.
A standout example of this is the advanced brickwork wall he completed, which is now displayed on one of the timber frame pods. It’s a proper showpiece in the workshop and something other students can look at as a benchmark. That level of work at Level 1 shows real commitment and pride in the trade. His attendance and commitment back this up as well. With 93% overall attendance and 86% in maths, Max shows up consistently and takes all aspects of his course seriously. He understands that success in construction isn’t just about practical ability – it’s about reliability, effort, and turning up ready to learn.
Another area where Max stands out is how he supports others. Recently, he has been working alongside Year 10 School Links students, helping them develop their skills and settle into the workshop environment. He does this in a calm, patient, and respectful way, and it’s clear they look up to him. It’s not something he’s asked to do – it’s something he’s naturally stepped into, which says a lot about his character.
Over the past three years, Max has grown into a mature, polite, and hardworking young person who represents exactly what we want from our learners. He has the right attitude, strong practical ability, and the willingness to keep improving. I fully expect him to progress onto an apprenticeship and do well in the industry. Max’s dedication, progress, and overall approach to his learning make him a very deserving candidate for Construction Student of the Year.
Adam Armstrong – Tutor
Ned is an outstanding candidate for Construction Learner of the Year. As a Joinery Level 1 learner, he has demonstrated exceptional commitment, achieving over 99% attendance and missing only two hours of college throughout the entire year. His dedication extends beyond the classroom, as shown by his selection as the Joinery ambassador, where he supported open events with absolute professionalism and represented the college with pride.
Over the year, Ned has grown significantly in confidence, becoming an active and positive presence in both the workshop and classroom. He is a respected member of the college community, valued highly by both his peers and staff for his attitude and approach. His reliability, professionalism, and willingness to engage make him a pleasure to teach and a true credit to the construction department.
Angela Wilson – Student Manager
Nathan has focuse in his practical works and has really practised to gain more skills and has given his work his full attention in sessions, he has worked hard at home behind the scenes and this has come through in his ability to answer more technical questions, throughout the course he has searched for employment and has gained emplyment in a bar where his interpersonal skills have been improved and his self confidence has also benefited, this is a skill he has embraced and thus has supported his interactions in college, he is more outgoing now as welcome to the end of the course. He was the first to enter into his technical practical synoptic which he did with confidence and self focus.
Nathans growth should be celebrated as his preston college journey is remarkable in the improvements he has made to become confidently employable, the first to hand me a C.V and enquire persistently about upcoming tests and how he has engaged with the canvas revision page.
Paul Jeffries -Tutor
It is with great pride that I nominate this learner for Student of the Year in recognition of their exceptional resilience, determination, and commitment to personal growth. Throughout the year, they have faced significant challenges and limitations, yet have consistently demonstrated an unwavering determination to succeed.
Rather than allowing obstacles to define them, this learner has shown remarkable strength by embracing challenges as opportunities for development. They have worked tirelessly to improve their skills, sought support when needed, and remained focused and motivated even during difficult periods.
His persistence and positive attitude are truly inspirational to both peers and staff. This learner’s journey is a powerful example of how resilience, hard work, and self-belief can lead to meaningful progress. His achievements are not only measured by academic outcomes, but by the courage and perseverance they display every day. Hassan Ahmed – Tutor
School of Maths, English and Sport
Charlee Gibbs is an exceptional and highly deserving nominee for Student of the Year at Preston College. As a final-year student studying the Level 3 Technical Diploma in Sport, Charlee has consistently demonstrated outstanding commitment, academic excellence, and a strong work ethic throughout her time at college. She is currently excelling in her studies, achieving Distinction-level work across all assignments, and is well prepared to progress onto higher education, having applied to study Physical Education at Liverpool John Moores University.
Charlee’s achievements extend well beyond the classroom. In her first year, she was recognised with a prestigious Student of the Year sports award, reflecting both her talent and dedication. She has been an integral member of the college’s women’s football team, proudly representing Preston College in fixtures across the North West.
Additionally, she was selected to participate in a regional skills competition, where she demonstrated leadership, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure while completing a range of sporting challenges. A natural leader, Charlee consistently motivates and supports her peers, displaying excellent coaching ability and communication skills—qualities that strongly align with her ambition to become a Physical Education teacher. She approaches all aspects of her studies with enthusiasm and professionalism, maintaining excellent attendance and a positive attitude towards learning. Her ability to thrive in demanding situations, combined with her determination to succeed, sets her apart as an outstanding student.
Charlee has been an exceptional student throughout her time at college and is one who will undoubtedly go on to achieve great success. Beyond her academic and sporting accomplishments, she is a reliable, motivated, and forward-thinking individual who embraces challenges and continuously strives for improvement. She is currently applying for a university scholarship, and she is a highly deserving candidate for such recognition. There is no doubt that Charlee will continue to flourish in a university environment and go on to make a significant impact in the field of Physical Education.
Jake Higham – Tutor
I would like to nominate Ewa Bajko for the “Skills Development – ESOL and Community Learning – Student of the Year” award. Ewa is a bright, hardworking, and highly determined student who has shown exceptional resilience throughout her learning journey. At the beginning of the course, she found aspects of the writing exam particularly challenging, but through sheer hard work, dedication, grit, and self-discipline, she persevered and achieved an excellent result. Ewa consistently demonstrates a fantastic attitude towards learning. She is committed, motivated, and always willing to put in extra effort to improve her skills and achieve her goals. Her progress over the year has been outstanding and is a real reflection of her determination and positive mindset. In class, Ewa’s presentations are always lively, engaging, and insightful. She has a natural ability to captivate her audience with her enthusiasm, humour, and dynamic approach to presenting. She brings energy and positivity into the classroom and is an inspiring presence for both staff and fellow students. Ewa is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through perseverance, hard work, and belief in yourself, making her thoroughly deserving of this award.
Gloria has demonstrated exceptional commitment and enthusiasm in GCSE Mathematics throughout the course. She consistently perform to a high standard and maintain an excellent 100% attendance record, reflecting their dedication and positive attitude towards learning. In every lesson, Gloria participates actively in all classroom tasks, contribute thoughtfully to discussions, and approach challenges with confidence and determination. She is also a positive role model for her peers, setting an excellent example through their behaviour, work ethic, and willingness to support others in the classroom. Her helpful and encouraging nature has had a valuable impact on the learning environment, making her a highly deserving candidate for this nomination.
I would like to nominate Iryna Ponomarenko for the “Skills Development – ESOL and Community Learning – Student of the Year” award. Iryna is an exceptionally hardworking and dedicated student who consistently produces work of the highest quality.
She quietly gets on with every task she is given, always showing commitment, focus, and a strong desire to do her very best. What makes Iryna especially deserving of recognition is her kind, patient, and inclusive nature. She works happily with everyone in the class, always making others feel supported and included. She is calm, respectful, and approachable, and her positive attitude has made a real difference within the classroom environment.
Her dedication and caring manner have earned her the affectionate title of “Class Captain” amongst her peers – a reflection of the respect and appreciation she receives from those around her. Iryna is a wonderful role model whose hard work, humility, and kindness make her thoroughly deserving of this award.
Katie is a highly deserving nominee for Student of the Year at Preston College. As a Level 3 Year 1 Sport student, Katie has quickly established herself as an outstanding member of the college community through her commitment, professionalism, and enthusiasm towards both her academic studies and wider college life.
Katie has demonstrated exceptional dedication throughout her first year, maintaining 100% attendance and consistently approaching all aspects of her studies with a positive attitude and strong work ethic. She has grown tremendously in confidence since joining Preston College and has embraced every opportunity available to her, demonstrating maturity and ambition beyond her years.
One of Katie’s most significant achievements has been progressing from Student Voice Representative to becoming a Student Governor. This is a fantastic accomplishment and reflects the respect and trust she has earned across the college community. Katie regularly attends meetings and events to represent the Sport department, confidently expressing her views and contributing positively towards improving student experiences at Preston College. Her willingness to represent others and engage in college leadership opportunities highlights her excellent communication and leadership skills. In addition to her academic commitment, Katie has proudly represented Preston College at university trips and regional skills competitions, always demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm, and a willingness to challenge herself.
She is an excellent role model for her peers and consistently contributes positively to the college environment. Katie has been an exceptional student throughout her time at Preston College so far and is someone who will undoubtedly continue to achieve great success in the future. She is motivated, reliable, and highly respected by both staff and fellow students, making her an outstanding candidate for this prestigious award.
School of Service Industries
Ashkan has been an exceptional student this year, demonstrating unwavering dedication, determination and resilience from start to finish. Throughout the entire duration of the course.
Despite significant challenges, her attendance and punctuality remained outstanding, reflecting her commitment to her studies. Ashkan not only kept up with the demands of the course – she excelled. She completed the full programme by April, just one week before her baby was due. To achieve this, she undertook a series of demanding examinations, including three large Anatomy and Physiology exams written largely in Latin. English is Ashkan’s second language, yet she mastered complex Latin terminology and achieved exceptional first time passes, all with results above 90%.
What makes Ashkan truly extraordinary is not just her academic success, but her character. Even while managing the physical and emotional challenges of pregnancy, she remained positive, supportive and engaged. She consistently uplifted her peers, offering help with revision and encouraging others along the way. Ashkan is an inspiration in every sense of the word. Her achievements this year go far beyond academic excellence – they reflect courage, resilience and an unshakeable drive to succeed. I wholeheartedly believe she is exceptionally deserving of the Student of the Year Award for Service Industries.
Janette Clitheroe – Tutor
Finley is a highly deserving candidate for Student of the Year, demonstrating outstanding personal growth, maturity, and commitment during his time at Preston College. Finley joined the college from high school and is now preparing to leave with an excellent overall Grade A. When he first started, Finley was in a classroom predominantly made up of female students and initially appeared shy and quiet. However, over time, he has shown remarkable personal development, growing in confidence and becoming fully engaged both socially and academically. Finley now interacts confidently with his peers and has become a valued and respected member of the group. His maturity and professionalism have developed significantly, particularly through his placement experiences, where he has thrived in an Early Years setting.
During placement, Finley has demonstrated dedication, reliability, and strong interpersonal skills. His progress has been recognised by his setting, where he has successfully secured part-time employment as a member of staff. This is a clear reflection of his commitment, capability, and the trust placed in him. Finley is also an incredibly supportive and dependable student within college. He has been described as a “right hand man,” consistently going above and beyond to support both his peers and tutor. He takes initiative in helping organise the group, guiding others to classrooms and assisting with carrying resources, demonstrating excellent teamwork and responsibility.
Finley also represented the college at the Lancashire Colleges Skills Competition. Although the team did not win, he contributed positively throughout and fully embraced the experience, demonstrating enthusiasm, professionalism, and a willingness to challenge himself. Finley brings a warm and engaging personality to the group. He is known for his friendly nature, including bringing in leftover takeaways for lunch, which adds to his approachable and down-to-earth character. We also share a mutual interest in Preston North End, and our discussions around team formations and manager tactics often bring humour and enjoyment to the wider group. Finley is a student I will greatly miss. Throughout his time at college, he has built strong relationships with both staff and peers, developing significantly in confidence and personality.
As he prepares to progress to university, I am confident he will manage this transition superbly. He has already shown leadership by supporting his peers with university applications and student finance. I hope Finley will keep in touch, and that we can one day continue our discussions about Preston North End’s future journey to the Premier League. Finley’s journey is a testament to his determination and personal growth. His increased confidence, strong work ethic, and positive attitude make him an excellent role model for others.
Barbara Blackburn – Tutor
I would like to nominate Jasmine Swann for Student of the Year for her exceptional dedication and positive impact during her time studying Level 1 Caring for Children. Jasmine is an absolute inspiration. She consistently shows outstanding motivation and determination, continually overcoming barriers and taking everything in her stride. She comes into class with a smile every day, brings a girly, positive energy to the room, and is truly a delight to teach. Jasmine sets high standards for herself and others and always demonstrates commitment – even on a Monday morning! The work Jasmine produces is of a very high standard, particularly the creative work she designs using Canva, which always stands out. She makes everyone smile and contributes so positively to the classroom environment.
Over the past year, her confidence has grown tremendously, and it has been a privilege to watch her flourish both personally and academically. Jasmine is naturally caring and thoughtful and never hesitates to offer a helping hand, whether that’s supporting her peers or assisting staff by handing out work or collecting my printing. She is always willing, always helpful, and always kind. She also has an endless collection of White Fox hoodies (which she knows I’m very jealous of!), and while we both share a love for watching TikTok, Jasmine is the professional when it comes to actually creating them. I am incredibly proud of everything Jasmine has achieved this year and cannot wait to see her continue to grow. For all of these reasons, Jasmine Swann is thoroughly deserving of Student of the Year.
Nicola Martland – Tutor
I would like to nominate Jasmine for the incredible resilience, determination, and positivity she has shown throughout her first year of college on the course she has completed. Despite facing challenges, she arrives each day with a smile on her face and a positive attitude towards learning.
Jasmine has shown remarkable strength and perseverance, never allowing obstacles to prevent her from achieving her goals. She consistently completes her work on time, always putting in great effort and striving to do her best. Her commitment to her studies, willingness to keep trying, and ability to remain focused and motivated have been inspiring to both staff and peers. She contributes positively to class, engages well in activities, and approaches every challenge with courage and determination. Amy Rhodes – Tutor
Katie is an exceptional Early Years student whose commitment, progression, and professional development make her a highly deserving candidate for Student of the Year. Katie began her journey at Preston College by enrolling on the Level 2 Early Years course, which she successfully completed with determination and enthusiasm. She then progressed onto the Level 3 programme, which she is about to complete after two years of dedicated study. Katie will leave with an outstanding overall Grade A, reflecting her consistent hard work and high academic achievement.
Throughout her studies, Katie has demonstrated an excellent work ethic and a genuine passion for working with young children. She has completed well in excess of the required 350 placement hours, showing exceptional dedication to developing her practical skills and experience. In class, Katie is an active and insightful contributor, regularly drawing on her placement experience to enrich discussions and support the learning of her peers. Her ability to link theory to practice demonstrates a strong understanding of Early Years principles and enhances the overall classroom environment. Katie has developed strong professional qualities, including reliability, confidence, and the ability to build positive and meaningful relationships with children and staff. Her class teacher has described Katie as her “right hand,” highlighting the trust, responsibility, and consistent support she provides both in the classroom and during placement.
Her professionalism and commitment have also been recognised by her placement setting, where she has successfully gained part-time employment within a primary school reception class. This is a clear testament to her abilities, work ethic, and the high regard in which she is held. Katie has also shown real resilience and determination in her maths studies. Although this has been an area of challenge, she has remained fully committed, attending her maths lessons consistently each week and working hard to improve.
As a result of her dedication and perseverance, she is on track to achieve a Grade 4. Katie further demonstrated her enthusiasm and talent by attending the Lancashire Colleges Skills Competition with her peers, where she was awarded a Rising Star award. This achievement reflects her ability to excel beyond the classroom and showcases her dedication to professional development. Katie is a fantastic role model for her peers and an excellent ambassador for the Early Years programme at Preston College. Her achievements, progression, resilience, and dedication clearly demonstrate her potential for a successful future career in Early Years education.
Barbara Blackburn – Tutor
Kaydie is a truly deserving nominee for the Foundation Learning Award, as she shows determination, resilience, and a genuine commitment to personal growth. Since starting her course in September, she has demonstrated an inspiring transformation, recently reflecting on how she “knew nothing” at the beginning of her journey and has since developed a wide range of skills through dedication and consistent effort. This self-awareness highlights not only how far she has come, but also her willingness to learn.
One of the clearest examples of Kaydie’s resilience is her involvement in the AHT competitions in Blackpool. Where she entered her own classes then showed courage and adaptability by stepping in to compete when another learner was unable to continue. Taking on such a challenge unexpectedly requires confidence and a strong mindset, both of which Kaydie demonstrated with maturity and determination. Her hard work and perseverance have also led to outstanding achievement, as demonstrated by her success in winning 1st place in the Lancashire college competitions representing Preston College.
This accomplishment is a testament not only to her developing technical abilities but also to the effort and dedication she has invested in improving her skills over time. Kaydie has not relied on natural ability alone; instead, she has worked steadily, building her confidence and competence step by step. Beyond her achievements, Kaydie contributes positively to the learning environment. She approaches each day with a mindset focused on improvement and is willing to support others, offering encouragement within the classroom.
Overall, Kaydie’s progress both academically and personally makes her an excellent role model. Her journey is an excellent example of what can be achieved through perseverance, and a commitment to self-improvement. She is highly deserving of recognition for the Foundation Learning Award.
Susan Grimes
Nik’s journey began in September 2024, and from his very first days on the course, it was clear he was someone special. Since then, he has consistently been an asset, not only to his classmates and tutors, but to the entire Travel and Tourism department, college events, and the wider college community as a representative of the institution. Nik was a member of the first-ever Travel and Tourism Lancashire Skills Competition, where he and his team achieved first place for the college……WEEERRHHHOOO! This milestone alone speaks volumes about his ability, commitment, and teamwork, but it is just one of many examples of his outstanding contribution.
He played a vital role in the planning and running of the Christmas event, showing professionalism, initiative, and reliability throughout. In the classroom, Nik consistently supports his peers, particularly working alongside a fellow student who struggles with their work. Nothing is ever too much trouble for him, and he does this quietly and kindly without being asked. Nik’s practical assessments, including the welcome meeting, safety demonstration, and guided tour, have been nothing short of outstanding. Academically, his achievements speak for themselves: Distinction Star across the board in both Level 3 courses in his first year, with every indication that he is on track to achieve the same again this year.
He has completed two exceptionally successful work experience placements, with employer feedback that has been an absolute pleasure to read, though it came as no surprise to us. Nik brings humour, creativity, and a level of reliability that is second to none. He represents the very best of what we hope our students will become. Nik is, without question, the Student of the Year 2026. He will be greatly missed, but he leaves with our absolute best wishes. The Travel and Tourism industry should be ready because Nik’s future is incredibly bright.
Sam Wilkinson – Tutor
Sarah is an outstanding candidate for the Student of the Year Award, having demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience, and contribution throughout her time at college. She consistently goes above and beyond, showing a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for learning as she strives to reach her full potential. Sarah is a valued and much‑loved member of her group, always supporting others with kindness, encouragement, and positivity.
She creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere in every session and is known for bringing people together – quite literally – by sharing the amazing cakes she brings in, a small but meaningful reflection of the care and effort she shows for those around her. With 100% attendance and an unwavering positive attitude, Sarah has remained fully engaged throughout the year. Even when faced with deeply devastating personal news towards the end of the course, she showed incredible resilience and strength. Despite these challenges, she continued to support her peers, maintain her commitment to learning, and work determinedly towards completing her hairdressing course.
Sarah embraces opportunities with creativity and enthusiasm, inspiring those around her through her perseverance and innovative approach. Her personal growth is evident in how she overcomes challenges with grace and determination, always leading by example. Through her compassion, reliability, and positivity, Sarah makes a lasting impact on the college community. She is not only an exceptional student but also a genuinely amazing person who uplifts others and embodies everything the Student of the Year Award represents.
Julie Richmond – Tutor
Will is a highly deserving recipient of the Foundation Learning Award, having shown exceptional determination, resilience, and personal growth throughout his learning journey. He first began his time with us as a 16-18 student and returned this year as an adult learner. The growth and change he has demonstrated since returning are truly exceptional. Will has embraced new challenges with courage and maturity, working consistently to build his skills and confidence. He shows a strong commitment to his own progress and is continually striving to become a better version of himself.
At every step of his journey, Will has shown resilience, perseverance, and a positive mindset, even when faced with obstacles. He approaches each day with a clear focus on improvement and success, demonstrating a willingness to keep trying and never give up. School of Skills Development – ESOL & Community
I am delighted to nominate this student for recognition in light of her exceptional dedication, attitude, and rapid progress as a young ESOL learner. From the outset, she has shown a consistently positive and determined approach to learning English. She is always willing to try, approaching every task with enthusiasm and a readiness to improve. Her commitment is evident in the remarkable progress she has made in a short period of time.
She is not only focused on her own success but also plays an important role in supporting others. She is highly motivational to her peers, encouraging them to keep going and helping to build confidence within the group. Her patience, kindness, and thoughtful nature make her a valued member of the class, and she contributes greatly to a supportive and positive learning environment. She demonstrates a strong work ethic and genuine enthusiasm for her education.
This is reflected in her decision to take on two vocational classes, even though she was only required to take one. This shows initiative, ambition, and a willingness to challenge herself beyond expectations. Additionally, she is studying independently and has shown remarkable resilience and maturity in managing her learning and responsibilities. She carries herself with a calm, respectful, and positive manner, which makes her a wonderful role model for others. Jasmine’s journey from apprentice to salon owner and now employer is inspiring and I believe she is a worthy winner of this award.
Liz Quispe – Tutor
Eaden is an exceptional Entry 3 ESOL student at Preston College who consistently demonstrates the college values and the Five As of Ambition through his attitude, behaviour, and commitment to learning. He embodies the college values by being welcoming and inclusive, always showing respect and kindness towards his peers and contributing positively to the classroom environment. He is supportive and compassionate, often encouraging others and willingly helping classmates when needed. Eaden is clearly aspirational for himself and others, setting high standards for his own learning and showing a strong desire to improve every day.
He acts with integrity and transparency, taking responsibility for his learning, demonstrating honesty, and showing maturity in his approach to challenges. He is also highly accountable, maintaining exceptional attendance, arriving prepared for lessons, and consistently giving his best effort. Eaden also strongly demonstrates the Five As of Ambition. His attendance is exceptional, reflecting his dedication and reliability. His attitude towards learning is consistently positive and enthusiastic, and he approaches every task with determination. His achievement has been outstanding, with significant progress in his English language skills since the beginning of the year.
His aspiration is evident in his motivation to continue learning and improving, always aiming higher. Finally, his actions show his commitment to success through active participation, resilience, and a willingness to challenge himself. As a teenage ESOL learner, Eaden’s progress this year has been wonderful. He has grown in confidence, developed his language skills significantly, and become a positive role model within the classroom. He is a highly deserving student who truly reflects the values and ambitions of Preston College.
Nurgul Salim – Tutor
Hanifa is a truly inspiring Level 1 Award ESOL student who began her studies at Preston College this year. As a mature student, she stands out for her exceptional determination and commitment to learning. Her age makes her achievements even more remarkable, as she continues to embrace new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm, proving that it is never too late to learn and grow.
In addition to her ESOL studies, Hanifa is also completing a Level 1 Award in Volunteering in English Language Teaching and Learning. This reflects not only her dedication to improving her own language skills but also her genuine desire to support others within her community. She is keen to use her developing knowledge to help fellow learners, contributing to a positive, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment.

Yohannes has been an outstanding addition to the Entry 3 teen programme this year. Although this is only his second year in the UK, his hard work and dedication to learning (including 100% attendance both years) has meant that he has made massive improvements in his English. As Maisie Booth’s Personal Tutor, I am delighted to nominate her for Student of the Year in recognition of her incredible determination, growth, and commitment to her studies. Maisie’s journey into Health and Social Care is one that demonstrates resilience, ambition, and a genuine passion for the sector. After successfully completing her Level 2 in Health and Social Care a couple of years ago, Maisie went on to undertake a nursery apprenticeship, gaining valuable experience and continuing to develop both personally and professionally.
After achieving her Maths qualification, she made the decision to return to college and enrol onto the Level 3 Health and Social Care course – a decision that has proven to be incredibly worthwhile. What has stood out most since Maisie’s return is the remarkable contrast in her attitude and approach to learning. Her growth has been exceptional, and the difference in her confidence, maturity, and commitment is truly amazing to witness. Maisie has returned with determination and purpose, embracing every opportunity to succeed. She is extremely passionate about Health and Social Care, and this passion shines through in everything she does.

Joseph Walsh – Tutor
Nikki has been with me as a student from Level 1, then progressing onto Level 2. She has many challenges in her life that would have brought other people down but Nikki has shown me the kind of resilience that has been built upon and developed over the years. Personally, with her own health challenges, I am always surprised she has the energy and enthusiasm to turn up to college every week, but she does.
She is encouraging of other students and a role model to show them that if she can do it, so can they. She meets regularly with students before class and is always bringing in little gifts for her classmates (and her teachers) to lift everyone up. She has so much to give and loves to learn. After her placement this year working in a care home, I could see her progress into working in advocacy in the future. She is empathetic to others, very much in tune with what is right and wrong and embodies the values and principles of person-centred care in her work. She has grown as a person from my Level 1 classes into a strong and confident young woman in Level 2.
She is always willing to help others out and is happy to take constructive feedback to be a better student. I am so proud of Nikki and all she has achieved academically, and the strong woman she has become.
Dee Gourlay – Tutor
When Terry first came in to my Level 1 class in September (I teach 5 courses, with 3 cohorts starting Sept, Jan and Apr) he quickly became part of the group. He found his feet quickly and although quiet and unassuming, he has soaked up all the learning and searched out more.
He became a valued class member and other students knew they could go to Terry if my LSAs were busy and he would help them. Over the months, Terry has sought out qualifications outside of college relating to his previous construction knowledge and experience and has successfully completed them, developing his skills in this area. My L1 course in January is Personal and Social Development, where my students will set themselves short, medium, and long-term goals and Terry took this very seriously, setting himself goals to progress to higher qualifications.
He is very interested in becoming a teacher and has asked for advice on enrolling on the TAQA Assessor’s qualification as well as teaching qualifications. More recently he has sought out voluntary work at the University of Lancashire and has since been accepted, and has completed his first session talking about his own personal struggles to counselling students under the guidance of Julia Johnson, the Service and Carer Involvement Facilitator, who emailed to say it was ‘an excellent session’ and ‘the students were very engaged and got a lot from it’. Julia has asked him if he would like to continue to do these sessions. This has helped build up Terry’s self-esteem and self-confidence after the challenges he has faced in his life. I am so proud of Terry and everything that he has achieved over this past year and the role model he has become to my other students. With his new found confidence, he has become my scribe in the class and the other students love it.
He is highly thought of and respected in class as well as being a friendly, approachable and enthusiastic student.

Ethan has been with us for 3 years, having started at level 2 , passing that and his Maths GCSE in his first year. Then progressing to level 3. He has always been a hard working and enthusiastic learner, who has applied himself to every task set. His attendance and punctuality this year are exemplary. over the three years he has worked hard to improve his knowledge and skills, although he was a sensible and mature person when he started with us, he has grown in his time with us, as has his professional behaviour and attitude.He is continuing with his educational journey next year, as he will be the first person in his family to attend university. He exemplifies the college’s aspiration to change lives through education.

Charlotte has been an exemplary student throughout her time with us. Over the past two years, she has applied herself diligently to every aspect of the course, demonstrating consistent commitment and determination. Charlotte has also represented the college in one of our annual Engineering competitions, further showcasing her enthusiasm and capability. As a mature student returning to education after a 40-year absence, she embodies the very essence of lifelong learning, demonstrating that determination, resilience, and courage can overcome even the most significant barriers. After decades away from formal study, she enrolled on the Access to Higher Education Science course with the ambitious goal of progressing to university.
From the outset, she faced considerable challenges -not only grappling with complex scientific content, but also navigating a modern educational landscape shaped by technologies and academic conventions entirely unfamiliar to her. Tasks many take for granted, such as using computers, applying Harvard referencing, and working with Excel, initially presented formidable obstacles. What distinguishes her is not the challenges she faced, but the extraordinary way in which she overcame them. Through unwavering perseverance and a remarkable work ethic, she has transformed within just nine months from a learner struggling with basic word processing into one who confidently analyses data, constructs graphs using Excel, and produces high-quality academic work.
Her progress has been nothing short of exceptional, culminating in Distinctions across the board in Chemistry -an achievement that reflects both intellectual capability and relentless dedication. Her commitment extends even further. Alongside her Access course, she has also undertaken GCSE Maths, demonstrating an exceptional drive to strengthen her academic foundation and maximise her future success. Courtney joined the college in September following personal challenges. Despite this, she was completely determined that Performing Arts was the course for her, something she demonstrated immediately through both her audition and her commitment from the very start of the year.
Courtney was initially placed on a two-year Level 2 course to allow her time to rebuild confidence in education, alongside resitting her Maths and English GCSEs and reintroducing her to mainstream learning. However, from the moment she started, Courtney approached everything with determination, resilience and an incredible work ethic.
She has worked exceptionally hard throughout the year and puts 100% effort into everything she does. Courtney is constantly looking for ways to improve, regularly asking for feedback and what she can do better, showing real maturity and dedication to her development. Her attendance, motivation and commitment to the course have been fantastic. As a result of all of her hard work, Courtney has far exceeded all expectations placed upon her. She has progressed so well that she is now completing her Level 2 qualification in just one year and is expected to achieve highly. Alongside this, she is also predicted to achieve a Grade 6 in her English GCSE – an incredible achievement considering she achieved a Grade 2 last year – which speaks volumes about the determination and effort she has shown throughout the year.

Since joining the programme, Jake has shown significant growth both personally and academically. One of the most noticeable areas of development has been his confidence. Over time, Jake has become increasingly comfortable within the classroom environment, building positive relationships with staff and peers and becoming more willing to engage in activities and contribute during lessons. Jake has also made incredible progress in his written work. When he first came to us, he found writing extremely challenging and was unable to complete written tasks independently without significant support.
However, through determination, perseverance and consistent effort, Jake has developed his confidence and ability in this area considerably. He is now able to complete written work with far greater independence, demonstrating how much he has grown in both his skills and self-belief. Another aspect of Jake’s journey that deserves recognition is the resilience and maturity he has shown as the only male student in his group. I would like to nominate Jenny for the Foundation Learning Award in recognition of the incredible progress, determination and resilience she has shown throughout her learning journey. When Jenny first joined college last year, she experienced personal challenges.
Over time, however, Jenny has shown truly remarkable growth. Through perseverance, courage and consistent effort, she has gradually developed confidence in herself and her abilities. One of the most noticeable changes has been her willingness to engage with others. Jenny is now comfortable speaking to unfamiliar people, something that once felt impossible for her, demonstrating just how far she has come personally and socially. Within the classroom, Jenny has also grown in confidence and participation. She now puts her hand up to contribute in lessons, shares her thoughts and ideas, and is becoming increasingly willing to take part in discussions.
These may seem like small moments to some, but for Jenny they represent huge milestones and reflect the determination she has shown and stepping outside of her comfort zone. Jenny’s progress has not happened overnight. It has been achieved through hard work, resilience and a genuine commitment to personal growth. Emily has faced significant challenges during her journey at college. As an incredibly shy learner, she found the transition into college difficult and struggled with attendance during the first term. However, what makes Emily’s journey so remarkable is the determination she has shown to overcome these barriers. Since returning after Christmas, Emily has approached college with a completely new attitude and renewed determination.
She has shown real commitment to her studies, demonstrating resilience and a willingness to push herself outside of her comfort zone. The progress she has made both personally and academically has been exceptional. One of Emily’s greatest achievements this year was taking on a lead role in Rock of Ages. This was an enormous step, requiring confidence, commitment and bravery. Emily fully embraced the challenge, working hard during rehearsals and developing her performance skills throughout the process.
Most significantly, she performed in front of a live audience for the first time, something that would once have felt incredibly daunting. Her willingness to step onto the stage and perform so successfully demonstrates just how far she has come. Emily’s journey is a powerful example of perseverance and personal growth. Oliver consistently brings a positive attitude to college and is a valued member of the classroom community. He approaches each day with enthusiasm, kindness and a willingness to get involved, helping to create a supportive and encouraging environment for both staff and peers. His positivity is infectious, and he consistently demonstrates a fantastic attitude towards learning and new opportunities.
This year, Oliver took on the lead role in Rock of Ages, a huge responsibility that he embraced with dedication and professionalism. He committed himself fully to the role, learning his lines, songs, staging and character work in impressive detail. Oliver knew the production inside and out and showed real commitment to ensuring the success of the show. Taking on such a significant role required confidence, perseverance and responsibility, all of which Oliver demonstrated throughout the rehearsal and performance process.
One of Oliver’s most significant areas of growth has been in his resilience, particularly when receiving feedback. Over time, he has developed a much stronger ability to respond positively to advice and constructive criticism, using it to improve rather than becoming discouraged. Laura Bragagnini – Tutor
Azeddine is a true inspiration to the rest of the class. This is his third year at Preston College, and he has moved from Entry 1 to Entry 3 in that time. His dedication to learning is second to none, showing up every class time with a smile on his face despite working all night. In addition to attending ESOL classes twice a week, he has also completed a Level 1 Digital Skills course this year and is also currently undertaking a security course outside of college.
Finally, he supports his children and wife to study as well, balancing home, work and study obligations beautifully. His depth of knowledge about the world, history and languages, his willingness to share his unique perspectives, his ability to talk to and work with all other students in the classroom, embracing different cultures, is truly inspiring. Azeddine encompasses all of the values of the Spirit of Preston, and is truly deserving of this award.

Isabel Wrennal is an outstanding nominee for The Spirit of Preston Award as she consistently demonstrates the values, ambition, and dedication that truly reflect the heart and character of Preston College. Throughout her time at college, Isabel has shown an exceptional work ethic and a genuine commitment to achieving the highest standards in everything she does. Whether working in the classroom or within the workshop environment, she consistently produces work of a very high standard and approaches every task with professionalism, focus, and determination. Her commitment to learning and personal development has been evident throughout her journey at college.
Over the last two years, Isabel has shown significant growth in confidence and maturity. She has developed into a highly capable and motivated young professional who embraces challenges positively and works hard to achieve her goals. Her progression has been impressive, and she has become an excellent role model to others through her attitude, resilience, and dedication.
A reflection of Isabel’s hard work and commitment is her achievement in securing a prestigious apprenticeship with a major car group. This accomplishment highlights not only her technical ability and strong work ethic, but also the professionalism and determination she demonstrates on a daily basis. She has taken every opportunity available to her and worked consistently toward building a successful future within the automotive industry.
Desnee Binks – Curriculum Leader
Some students do well. Some students are kind. And every so often, a student comes along who quietly lifts everyone around them just by being who they are. Louie is one of those students. I first met Louie at our welcome evenings over a year ago, where his enthusiasm was impossible to miss. From taking part confidently in the Public Services quiz to throwing himself into the emergency evacuation challenge, he stood out immediately. More recently, Louie has gone on to lead our welcome evenings, building on what we had done before and making the experience even better for prospective students. Since joining the course, Louie has become a much‑loved and highly respected member of our college community. He is warm, polite, and genuinely kind. He never becomes involved in drama; instead, he quietly looks out for others – carrying games and icebreakers to help people feel included, and even bringing food for those who haven’t eaten.
These small acts of care say everything about his character. Louie has represented the Public Services department with pride and professionalism, including during Remembrance activities and our inter‑schools Public Services competition, where he was recognised for his exceptional leadership, teamwork, and ability to engage others. During a real‑world security task in the centre of Preston with external agencies, Louie’s calm problem‑solving skills and professionalism truly stood out. As one guest speaker said: “Louie stood out immediately. He demonstrated calm problem‑solving, excellent communication, and professionalism well beyond his age. He is the kind of young person you would want on your team.”
Beyond college, Louie volunteers at Youth Zone Preston and is involved in Youth Parliament, showing that his commitment to public service and supporting others goes far beyond the classroom. With another year still ahead of him, he is on track to achieve excellent grades – but more importantly, he does so with integrity, accountability, and ambition. If we could employ Louie today, we absolutely would – but it’s clear that even greater opportunities lie ahead for him.
If the Spirit of Preston Award exists to recognise the very best of who we are as a college, then Louie is already living it, every single day.
Jo Heath – Curriculum Leader
Firstly, I hesitated to nominate Marya ( in a good way!) because I nominated her in 2025 and she went on to proudly and deservedly win the award. Then I thought about this and remembered that in all aspects of society, people go on to win in their field time and time again as they demonstrate consistently to high standards and stand by their values. Therefore, I nominate Marya, for a second time, as despite being in her final year, she continues to commit to the charitable works of the college, the manning of pastoral events and play a key role as a volunteer at the Foxton centre ( in her own time).
Marya embodies the spirit and values of the college because she recognises the importance of giving back to others not for recognition, itself, but because it is an entrenched value to help others and share this goodwill. Marya holds herself accountable to delivering on what she says she will do – what I mean by this, is that she is 100% true to her word in turning up if that is what she has promised. She carries herself with a dignity , grace and kindness that means others are welcomed to work with her and around her.
Marya has a voice too and uses this to share her ideas and encourage others to do the same – she has become an invaluable part of the college community and her quiet resilience, thoughtfulness and sense of propriety will be missed here. I envisage Marya to go on to a wonderful future in which her consistent and proactive approach in college will be translated into a promising career . Thank you Marya and Good Luck for the future.

Some students meet expectations, but every now and then you teach a student who genuinely sets the standard for others to follow. Max Brooks is one of those students, and I am proud to nominate him for the Spirit of Preston Award.
Max joined Preston College in 2023 as a School Links student from St Michael’s School in Chorley, and since then I’ve had the pleasure of teaching him and watching him develop over the past three years. What stands out most is not just his ability, but the way he carries himself day to day. He has grown into a mature, respectful, and hardworking young person who consistently reflects the values we expect from our students. His Attitude is excellent. Max is always positive, gets on with his work without needing to be pushed, and takes pride in what he does. He approaches both practical and theory sessions with the same focus and determination, and it’s clear he wants to do well. He’s the type of student you can rely on to get on with things and set the right tone in the group.
When it comes to Accountability, Max takes responsibility for his own progress. He listens carefully to feedback, acts on it, and uses it to improve his work. He understands the importance of working safely and properly in a construction environment and consistently shows respect for the workshop, the tools, and the people around him. He doesn’t look for shortcuts – he puts the effort in to get things right. His Attendance shows his commitment. With 93% overall attendance and solid engagement in maths at 86%, he demonstrates that he takes his education seriously and understands the importance of being present and consistent. He turns up ready to work and makes the most of his time in college. Max’s Aspiration is clear in the way he pushes himself, particularly in the workshop. He doesn’t just aim to pass – he wants to improve and be better.
The advanced brickwork wall he completed, now displayed on one of the timber frame pods, is a perfect example of this. It’s a high-quality piece of work that shows patience, skill, and pride, and it stands as a clear example to others of what can be achieved with the right mindset. In terms of Achievement, Max has completed all of his coursework to a strong standard and made clear progress from where he started. The difference between the student who first joined as a School Links learner and the one we see now is significant, and that comes down to his effort and consistency over time.
What really sets Max apart, though, is how he supports others. Recently, he has worked alongside Year 10 School Links students, helping them develop their skills and confidence in the workshop. He does this naturally, with patience and encouragement, and sets a great example through his behaviour and attitude. That kind of influence has a real impact on younger students and helps create a positive environment for everyone. Max fully represents the Spirit of Preston. He shows the right attitude, takes responsibility, turns up, pushes himself, and achieves, all while supporting others around him.
He’s a credit to the college and a student who deserves to be recognised for the example he sets every day.
Adam Armstrong – Tutor
After joining us following a year at another college, and truly getting to know him, he has demonstrated unwavering aspiration, consistently setting high standards for himself and working with determination to achieve them. Nikhil’s excellent attendance, engagement and accountability reflect his strong commitment to learning. He consistently puts himself forward for opportunities, approaching every task with a positive and proactive attitude. He has volunteered to sell sweets for Children in Need fundraising, stayed out of hours to meet with the EQA, and represented the college in the 2025 Skills Competition, where his team went on to win.
Almost all work submitted has hit distinction, and when he has found himself a little ahead, he is always happy to support other learners who may need a boost in support to get caught up. He has been on every trip out and during last year’s cabin crew trip he was noted by staff as impressive with his enthusiasm, willingness to get stuck in and general conduct. It’s refreshing that he can always find the finny in things, something that helped him in more pressurising tasks. He is a pleasure to teach and fully represents what it means to live the 5 As. Preston College truly needs more students like Nikhil.

Higher Education Student of the Year
Dale Close should be considered for the Higher Education Student of the Year Award in Engineering because of the exceptional progress, maturity, professionalism and commitment he has demonstrated throughout the two years on the course. He has faced recent personal challenges but still manage to study and not let this effect his grades. He has consistently shown determination and dedication in relation to his performance. Outside of his course and his employment, Dale has developed a health and safety system for production lines that he is patenting and has presented his design brief and project plan to us outside of any course requirement to do so. Dale consistently completes and submits his work on time, and the standard of his work is very good achieving distinction grades in all 8 units. He takes pride in what he produces and has demonstrated a willingness to learn, improve, and accept feedback positively.

Student Nomination: Steph McCartney I am delighted to nominate Steph McCartney in recognition of her outstanding contribution as a student and practitioner over the past two years. Steph has consistently demonstrated excellence across all aspects of her studies, producing academic work of an exceptionally high standard. Her assignments reflect not only strong subject knowledge, but also critical engagement, thoughtful reflection, and a clear commitment to improving practice within the field of SEND education. Alongside her academic achievements, Steph has successfully navigated the demands of her professional role as a SEND Transitions Lead.
She has balanced these responsibilities with resilience and determination, even while managing significant health and personal challenges. Despite these pressures, Steph has remained fully committed to both her learners and her own professional development, embodying perseverance and professionalism throughout. Steph’s teaching practice is exemplary.
She has consistently achieved outstanding teaching observations, demonstrating a deep understanding of her learners’ needs and an ability to create inclusive, engaging, and supportive learning environments. Her passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of learners with SEND is evident in every aspect of her work. She goes above and beyond to ensure her learners feel valued, empowered, and capable of achieving their potential.
A particular strength of Steph’s work is her focus on learner progression and independence. This is clearly illustrated in her action research project, which explored how to better prepare learners for key transitions, such as leaving college and progressing to their next steps. Through this research, Steph developed practical, learner-centred strategies to support independence and improve outcomes for her learners. The project demonstrates both innovation and a strong commitment to evidence-informed practice, with clear impact on her provision.
Steph is an exceptional student whose dedication, resilience, and passion set her apart. She is a true advocate for her learners and a highly deserving candidate for this nomination.
Siobhan Dawson – Tutor
Francesca (Chess) has demonstrated an excellent level of academic commitment this year, her grades have reflected the commitment and passion for the course. In particular Chess’s production of a research proposal showed her acumen in using a subject area close to her heart, enabling her to use her commitment to her own ‘active political stance’ as a springboard to deliver an excellent research proposal. She has shown focus, determination and pushed her own understanding beyond the expectation both herself and the teaching staff would expect. Her research piece ‘counselling intervention for refugees’ is aligned with the college’s status as a sanctuary.

Tillie An is an exceptional nominee for the Higher Education Student of the Year Award, consistently demonstrating the professionalism, maturity and dedication that embody the very best of Higher Education at Preston College. Throughout her studies, Tillie has shown outstanding commitment to her development both academically and professionally. She approaches every aspect of learning with focus, independence and determination, always striving to refine her skills and deepen her understanding of the industry. Her passion for performance is evident in the high standards she sets for herself and in the professionalism she brings to every class, rehearsal and project.
Alongside the demands of her studies, Tillie is already successfully working within the industry, performing in shows for MH Productions in Blackpool. Balancing professional commitments alongside higher-level study requires exceptional discipline, resilience and time management, all of which Tillie demonstrates consistently. Her ability to maintain such a strong work ethic whilst continuing to grow academically is a true reflection of her ambition and commitment to her future career. This year, Tillie also achieved the title of Miss Blackpool, an accomplishment that highlights not only her talent and confidence, but also her professionalism, dedication and positive presence within the wider community.
