The First Step Towards a Lifetime of Opportunities

When Alan first walked through the doors of Preston College, he was looking for an opportunity to build a better future – he couldn’t have imagined just how much his life was about to change.

Starting with Level 1 English and Maths in 2012, Alan continued to build his confidence and skills, progressing through GCSE English, Level 2 Maths, Health and Social Care, an Access to Higher Education Diploma, and ultimately graduating from the University of Lancashire with a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Today, Alan enjoys a rewarding career at Community Gateway, following roles within housing and the Probation Service – opportunities he once never imagined possible.

Reflecting on his journey, Alan said:

“The tutors were fantastic and the support was amazing. They empowered me to achieve my potential. They knew when to be tough and when I needed that little bit of care.”

For Alan, education wasn’t simply about gaining qualifications. It was about believing in what was possible.

“I learnt that you can achieve anything if you put your mind to it and put in the effort. The journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step, and Preston College was mine.”

Years later, Alan still speaks warmly about the friendships he built and the encouragement he received from tutors who believed in him every step of the way.

Alan’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to discover your potential. One decision to return to education can open doors to new opportunities, rewarding careers and a future you never thought possible.
