Turning Life Experience into Purpose

Inspired by her own experiences of mental health challenges and the loss of her brother to addiction, Kerry-Lee decided to return to education with a clear purpose: to better understand mental health and build a career supporting others.

After completing her Level 1 and Level 2 counselling courses, she continued her progression by enrolling on the Foundation Degree in Person Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy. Alongside her studies, Kerry-Lee has undertaken a placement at Horizon, where she supports people in recovery from addiction. After graduating, she hopes to continue working in counselling helping others rebuild their lives.

Throughout the course, Kerry-Lee has developed a deeper understanding of counselling approaches, particularly the importance of empathy, active listening, unconditional positive regard and congruence. Alongside these professional skills, she has experienced significant personal growth, learning to value herself, show compassion and create a safe space for others to feel heard.

Reflecting on her experience, Kerry-Lee said:

“This course has been fantastic. The staff have all been amazing, from the tutors and their guidance, to the support staff, and the library team, who have helped me with my academic work.”

For Kerry-Lee, Preston College has given her the knowledge, confidence and skills to pursue a meaningful path that reflects both her values and her ambition to support others on their own journeys towards recovery.

Congratulations, Kerry-Lee, and we wish you every success as you continue your career in counselling.
