Functional Skills English provides the basis for effective communication and understanding across the three subject skill areas; speaking and listening, reading and writing. The English Functional Skills is offered from Entry Level 2 up to Level 2.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will learn to write clearly and concisely, being able to apply this knowledge to a number of practical writing tasks. You will increase your command of English and express yourself more confidently. The course will broaden your skills and confidence to help you get on in life and work. If people can select and use these skills appropriately they can: Communicate effectively as a citizen and engage competently and confidently with others, Solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations, Help take an active and responsible role in the community, everyday life and the workplace and Participate, make positive contributions and respond appropriately in discussions and exchanges.

Basic English
There are no specific questions on spelling, punctuation and grammar in the examination, but you will be expected to punctuate and spell correctly, as well as write grammatically correct English.

Speaking and Listening
For Unit 1 of the course you are required to complete presentations and discussions which will be internally assessed.

Reading Comprehension
For this unit you will be asked questions to assess your understanding and responses to a variety of texts. For example, how to select information from source materials and present your responses in short statements.

Extended Writing
For this unit you will be required to write according to clear guidelines. For example, to write a letter, an email or a newspaper article.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

This programme is classroom based, however, the college do offer a distance learning option in some circumstances. Distance learning will be discussed with eligible applicants after the assessment and interview stage of the application process.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Unit 1 – Speaking and Listening
You are required to complete presentations and discussions which will be internally assessed.

Unit 2 – Reading
Consists of an examination paper which is around 1 hour long. Entry level will be internally assessed and level 1 and level 2 externally.

Unit 3 – Writing
Consists of an examination paper which is around 1 hour long. Entry level will be internally assessed and level 1 and level 2 externally.
