FORENSIC & CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION - LEVEL 3

Forensic Science is firmly embedded in modern day criminal investigations and continues to develop with scientists using new technologies to pioneer new methods. The UK has a proud history of using science in investigations and was the first country to use DNA profiling to exonerate a innocent man and capture the real perpertrator. 

On this course you will have the opportunity to study a range of science modules and units focussing on forensic and criminal investigation. These units will develop your science skills and criminal investigation techniques.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Year 1: Principles & Application of Science 1; Practical Scientific Procedures & Techniques; Science Investigation Skills; Forensic Investigation Procedures in Practice; Physiology of Human Body Systems; and Forensic Genetics.

Year 2: Applications of Criminology; Criminal Investigation Procedures in Practice; Applications of Criminal & Forensic Psychology; Practical Chemical Analysis; Microbiology & Microbiological Techniques; Forensic Photography; and Forensic Traffic Collision Investigation.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

You will be taught by industry experience tutors who will use a variety of methods including lectures, practical experiments, group activities, e-learning, projects and field studies.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

There are a variety of assessment methods including; examinations, written coursework, presentations and practical experiments. You will be assessed throughout the programme.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

This qualification is equivalent to three A-Levels and worth upto 168 UCAS points, depending on your grades. This allows progression to related degree programmes across the country including the University of Central Lancashire Forensic Science & Criminal Investigation BSC (Hons). Alternatively you can seek employment in the industry. Career opportunities include: Analytical Chemist, Forensic Scientist, Detective, Laboratory Technician and Toxicology. 

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

You will need to purchase a Lab Coat and Safety Glasses for practical work. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You need five GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including Science and English Language or Maths at a grade 4 with a minimum grade 3 for the other subject.
