The achievement of this qualification confers threshold status to teach. The award is appropriate for teachers, tutors and trainers who may be working within an FE environment or delivering work based training within voluntary, community, private and public organisations or if you want to get into teaching or training in the workplace.
The award gives an introduction to teaching and explores roles and responsibilities associated with teaching; the planning and delivering of sessions including engaging and motivating learners and respecting boundaries within a learning environment. It explores the different assessment methods and the need for record keeping. The delivery of an observed micro-teaching session is a requirement of this qualification.
You will complete three units which are detailed below:
- Understand own role, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
- Understand inclusive approaches in education and training
- Understand assessment in education and training
The course will guide you through the planning stages covering session plans, learning and teaching resources through to assessments methods and providing effective feedback. You will be expected to evaluate your own performance as well as receiving developmental feedback from tutor and peers. Examination of record keeping, equality and diversity and motivational techniques with consideration of how to promote inclusivity will occur throughout. You will be expected to do further reading to develop structured learning in class. This is an intensive course with an emphasis on independent learning between the sessions.
You will be taught by experienced and supportive tutors through discussion and practical application of theory.
You will complete three written assignments, engage in lesson observations, deliver a micro-teaching session and keep reflective logs.
On successful completion you could progress onto the Certificate in Education or Post Graduate Certificate in Education if you hold the required requisites.
Students will need to have a GCSE grade C or equivalent in English and Maths. If you don’t have these qualifications you will be required to complete a diagnostic assessment to confirm suitability for the course. You will need to demonstrate working at level 2. Students must not have a criminal background which may prevent them from working with young people and/or vulnerable adults. Please contact an advisor to discuss this further. It is also desirable that students possess a Level 2 qualification in the subject that they wish to teach.
