Maths and English Courses Help Ian To Secure His Dream Career

48 year old Ian began his career as an Electrical Engineer in South Africa, running a successful business for over 20 years, repairing home appliances. Moving to the UK in 2016, Ian worked for a number of years as a Service Manager for an appliance repair company, using his knowledge of home appliance repairs from his previous role.

With dreams of becoming a Paramedic, but never having the opportunity to pursue his passion, Ian’s journey to a complete career change started in September 2018. Making the bold decision to quit his job and realising all degree courses asked for English and Maths qualifications at Level 2, Ian enrolled upon the Level 2 Functional Skills in both English and Maths, at Preston’s College.

Progressing onto the Access to Higher Education Science course in September 2019, Ian began applying for Paramedic Science degrees, as soon as the UCAS process opened. He also applied for Paramedic Apprenticeships at various ambulance trusts, across the UK.

Speaking about his time at Preston’s College, Ian said: “All of the courses I undertook provided me with a fantastic foundation, preparing me for my future career in Paramedic Science. The skills I have learnt throughout my time in Preston have provided me with the confidence to attend and present at university interviews, leading to me receive numerous offers of places on highly competitive degrees. I could not have achieved these results without the support and qualifications I secured in Preston.”

February 2020 saw success for Ian, as he discovered he had secured a paid Apprenticeship with East of England Ambulance Service Trust, starting in March 2020, meaning an immediate move to Essex from Preston for Ian.

For Ian, this does now means putting his Access studies on hold, to undertake 16 weeks of essential training – 12 weeks of clinical training and 4 weeks of blue light driving, before beginning an eight month work placement. Upon successful completion, Ian will become a qualified Associate Ambulance Practitioner, with plans to resume his Access to Higher Education Science course upon completion, before progressing onto a degree, to become a fully qualified Paramedic.
