Why Adult Education Matters More Than Ever

Adult education is rarely just about gaining a qualification. More often, it begins with a single decision – to believe that life can still change. Whether it leads to a new career, renewed confidence or a long-held ambition finally realised, learning opens doors that many adults never imagined were still within reach.

For generations, education was viewed as something that happened at the beginning of life. We studied at school or college, perhaps went to university, found a career and remained on that path until retirement.

Today’s world looks very different. That’s why adult education matters more than ever.

Technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace. Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we work. Industries are adapting to new skills demands, careers are becoming less linear, and many people can now expect to change roles, or even professions, several times during their working lives.

Technical skills remain essential, with employers increasingly looking for the uniquely human qualities that technology cannot replace, including creativity, communication, collaboration, leadership, critical thinking and compassion. People need to ensure their skills keep in pace with this change, and adult education helps them develop both.

Many adult students are balancing study alongside work, family life and caring responsibilities. Parents often return to education once their children become more independent, others find themselves at a crossroads later in life, looking for fresh purpose or preparing for a new chapter as retirement approaches. Increasingly, adults are recognising that learning is not confined to one stage of life; it is something that can open new doors at any age.

Every year, almost 6,000 adults choose to learn with us at Preston College. Last year alone, we awarded more than 9,000 adult qualifications, helping people develop the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to progress in work, further study and everyday life.

The benefits extend far beyond employment. Learning can improve confidence, increase self-esteem, strengthen social connections and support mental wellbeing. For some adults, education provides opportunities to meet new people, overcome feelings of isolation and rediscover a sense of purpose. For others, the greatest achievement isn’t the certificate – it’s the return of self-belief.

But the impact doesn’t stop with the individual. When adults develop new skills, employers gain access to a more capable workforce, businesses become more productive and innovative, and communities grow more resilient. The impact is particularly significant in Preston, where around 70% of our adult students come from some of the city’s most deprived communities. Despite the challenges many face, these students achieve an outstanding 97% pass rate, demonstrating that, with the right support, opportunity and ambition, education can be a powerful driver of social mobility and life-changing success.

One person returning to education can inspire a whole family, support local employers and strengthen the community around them. This has never been more important as our population ages and employers face increasing skills shortages across key sectors including health and social care, engineering, construction, digital technologies and green industries. Lifelong learning ensures people can continue to adapt, while helping new talent enter sectors that are critical to the region’s future.

Today, Preston College supports 41% of Lancashire’s adult learning market, working alongside employers to develop the skills local industries need both now and in the future. That impact is reflected in our students’ achievements. In 2024/25, adult students achieved an outstanding overall pass rate of 96.7%, rising to 98.2% for students studying through an Advanced Learner Loan. Access to Higher Education students achieved a 100% pass rate, while students studying STEM subjects achieved an exceptional 98.4% pass rate.

Behind every statistic is someone who has invested in their future, gaining new skills, progressing into employment, changing career, earning a promotion or taking the next step to university. These achievements don’t just benefit individuals; they help strengthen Lancashire’s workforce, support local employers and contribute to a more productive regional economy.

As we celebrate Adult Student Week 2026, we are proud to recognise not only the achievements of our adult students, but also the wider contribution they make to Lancashire’s future. Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing the inspiring stories of students who have changed career, progressed to university, overcome personal challenges, developed new skills and transformed their lives through education. Their journeys remind us that no two adult students begin in the same place, but every journey has the potential to change a future.
