Staff Story – Dan Lin, Curriculum Leader of Maths

A challenging and rewarding role with an innovative and fantastic team

Dan Lin, Curriculum Leader: Maths

The School of Sport, English and Maths are looking to recruit a new Curriculum Leader of Maths as the current post-holder moves on to a new position. There are a lot of young people and adults that need a leader in maths who can make a difference and help them achieve.

Dan Lin, the departing Curriculum Leader shares his thoughts about the difference you can make:

“When students start college after leaving high school without the grade 4 in maths they can be disillusioned and unmotivated to try again. That’s why we do things differently at Preston College. The team are fantastic here, they are always willing to try new things, they create a great atmosphere in the classroom and staff room and make it enjoyable.

At a college there isn’t as much pressure to get the results as there is in a school, it is about motivating the students, celebrating those little steps forward and boosting their confidence. The mock results and the November resit results were good and it was great to see the impact that the team and I made.”

At Preston College there is an extensive CPD programme, a generous holiday allowance, teacher’s pension scheme and family friendly policies such as work from home options (outside of term-time).

Dan adds: “It is a better work-life balance than working in a high school. You get extra admin time, less marking with concise diagnostics and streamlined lesson planning, as you teach the same content multiple times a week. You can be really focussed as well; you can tailor your lessons to focus on ability.”

Part of the role of Curriculum Leader is to contribute to the effective planning and timetabling of curriculum, a part of the role where Dan feels he has made a positive impact.

“As well as timetabling students by capability, I have also been able to implement positive changes to the curriculum, providing alternative ways for students to improving their maths skills. The team and I have been able to teach in more visual ways and seeing the teaching improve due to the changes made and the students results improving is an achievement I am really proud of.”

The Curriculum Leader in Maths role at Preston College is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about teaching and maths, wants to make a difference, and is looking for a role where they can be innovative and gain experience of managing staff.
