Preston College Celebrates British Sign Language Week

Preston College is proud to join the national celebration of British Sign Language (BSL) Week, recognising the importance of BSL and the vital role it plays in connecting millions of people across the world.

As a college committed to inclusion, we work hard to ensure every student feels supported – both in the classroom and across campus. Our dedicated staff play a key role in making communication accessible, helping to create an environment where all students can thrive.

To mark the week, we have spoken to staff and students about what British Sign Language means to them and why it remains such an essential part of an inclusive society. You can watch their reflections in the video below.

Pat Jenkinson, one of our Communication Support Workers with 25 years of experience, says:

“I’ve been here since 2001 and I love it – every day is different. I enjoy working one‑to‑one with students and building a good rapport with them. Seeing them achieve and go off to university is incredibly rewarding.”

British Sign Language Week is an opportunity to learn, reflect, and raise awareness of the Deaf community and the importance of accessible communication. At Preston College, we are proud to champion these values as part of our ongoing commitment to transforming lives through education.
