Bronze Medal for Thomas at the 2019 WorldSkills UK LIVE!

A truly well-deserved and huge congratulations to Thomas, who at just 17 and in his second year of his Plastering Apprenticeship with Preston’s College, has won the Bronze Medal at this year’s WorldSkills UK LIVE! Tournament at the NEC, Birmingham.

Over four days (Wednesday 20th Nov through to Saturday 23rd Nov) Thomas competed in this, the UK’s largest skills, Apprenticeships and careers event; competing against other Apprentices and those highly-skilled in the trade.

Thomas says: “This was a real privilege and a fantastic opportunity to showcase my skills and everything I have learnt whilst on my Apprenticeship. It was incredible to compete in a national competition and it was so much fun. The level of skills that others brought was so very high so I’m over the moon to have been awarded the Bronze Medal.”

WorldSkills UK LIVE! brought together over 70,000 young people with key players in UK business, governments and education. The event hosted and promoted a diverse range of sectors, from engineering and construction, business and IT, to hospitality and creative arts.

Paul Morville, Thomas’s tutor, says: “This by far has been one of my proudest moments in my teaching career. The event itself was fairly overwhelming as it was on such a big scale; bigger than I could have ever imaged so I’m so proud of Thomas for really coming to the floor and doing his best.

“Thomas competed against some of the best Plasterers in the UK and to win Bronze is just incredible.”

He continues, “Thomas is an exemplary student and it has been a pleasure to share this journey with him. He has shown unbelievable resistance during this competition and his award is very much deserved.”

Thomas now waits to find out if he has been chosen to represent Great Britain on the world stage and join ‘Squad UK’ for WorldSkills Shanghai 2021!
