Level: Level 1
Last Updated: 10-08-22

The CSCS Construction Health and Safety course provides the opportunity to study a range of essential modules, from the importance of safe manual handling to key principles in maintaining and improving health and safety at work. Upon successful completion of the course, you will have gained vital skills, required for success on construction sites and, upon completion of all elements successfully, will be provided with a FREE CSCS Green Card (operatives only, this is not suitable for demolition). This card is required to gain access to most major construction sites in the UK.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of the CSCS Health and Safety in a Construction Environment Level 1 course you will study five units, including:

  • Know the principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work
  • Know the importance of safe manual handling in the workplace
  • Know the importance of working safely at heights in the workplace
  • Know risks to health within a construction environment
  • Know the importance of working around plant and equipment safely

Upon successful completion of the course, you will have gained essential skills required for success on site, in the following:

  • Selecting and identifying appropriate PPE
  • Completing basic risk assessments
  • COSSH awareness
  • Manual handling techniques
  • Knowledge of The Working at Height Regulations (WAHR)
  • Identifying hazards to health
  •  Awareness of the dangers when working around heavy machinery and equipment

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

The nature of this course means that it is classroom based. You will have access to a suite of computers for the duration of the course and learners often come from a variety of backgrounds, meaning no previous site or employment experience is necessary.

As this course is classroom based, a uniform and PPE are not required but you will study in the purpose built Construction building. Home to an array of specialist workshops, for all trades, the building reflects real-life industry working practices and expectations.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed via completion of a workbook and successfully passing the CSCS exam – a multiple choice, 49 question examination.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

The course is studied over a two week period on a part-time basis.

You are required to attend all sessions and participate fully in any classroom based activities. Some mock practice tests will be undertaken, to practice for the CSCS exam and to assess progress.

There is no specific kit or PPE required for this short course but you are required to bring paper and pens to each class.
