Gorilla Glue Preston’s College Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery learner, Jamie Stanley, has received a national accolade after being crowned the 2018 Gorilla Glue Apprentice of the Year.

The UK’s most recognised adhesive brand, Gorilla Glue, launched the Apprentice of the Year competition to find the UK’s most ‘Talented and Tough’ apprentice. Jamie Stanley successfully beat six other finalists from colleges across the UK to be crowned the 2018 Gorilla Glue Apprentice of the Year.

Over 100 apprentices took part in the regional heats, before seven finalists were selected to complete their own upcycling project. Jamie’s winning project was the Infinity Table (pictured), made entirely from recycled wooden pallets.

Jamie, aged 16 from Clayton-le-Woods, made the Infinity Table by stripping and de-nailing old pallets, cleaning the timber and creating interlocking joints to form the table. He used Gorilla Glue throughout the project to support the manufacture of the legs and the main body of the table.

The finished table provides the effect of a mine shaft when the light is switched on inside. Jamie also made a little ladder insert into the table, to support the effect.

The competition judges comprised of Gorilla Glue Europe MD Simon Damp, Apprentice Builder Magazine Assistant Editor Kieran Nee, and former BBC Young Carpenter of the Year Tibby Singh Chodha.

A delighted, Jamie Stanley, said: “I wanted to create something eye catching, that would stand out from normal coffee tables and I felt that the Infinity Table would certainly do that.

“I am really chuffed to have been chosen as the Gorilla Glue Apprentice of the Year and I know that my Mum will be especially proud of me. I’m looking forward to taking the Infinity Table home with me and my Dad is looking forward to showing it off to our friends and family!”

Mark Taylor, Head of School for Construction and the Built Environment, said: “I’m extremely proud of Jamie and his creation for the Gorilla Glue Apprentice of the Year competition and the skill and ingenuity it took for him to complete it.

“For Preston’s College, winning this competition truly demonstrates our ethos to make sure that our students are as employable as they can be.”

Simon Damp, Managing Director of Gorilla Glue Europe said: “We launched the 2018 Apprentice of the Year competition to work with the trade professionals of the future and to find an apprentice who really stands out, with talent and a natural flair for their trade.

“We were extremely impressed by the quality of all of the apprentices work in the final, however, Jamie’s work really stood out. The Infinity Table really fits the Gorilla Glue credentials; it is tough, durable and innovative and we are delighted to crown him the 2018 Gorilla Glue Apprentice of the Year!”
