Preston College Bricklaying Apprentices Triumph at Regional Competition

It was a brilliant day for construction talent at the North West Regional Guild of Bricklayers competition, where two Preston College bricklaying apprentices, Isaac and Alex took first place in the Junior and Senior categories respectively.

The prestigious event brought together the region’s most promising bricklaying apprentices to showcase their skills under pressure. Both students demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship, attention to detail, and composure; qualities that earned them the judges’ praise and secured their well-deserved first place wins.

“Taking part in the competition was an amazing experience,” said Isaac, winner of the Junior category.

“It pushed me to stay focused and really tested what I’ve learned at the college and on-site. I’m very proud of what I achieved.”

Alex, who triumphed in the Senior category, added: “Winning means a lot. It shows how far I’ve come with the support of my tutors and my employer. It’s great to be recognised for the hard work we put in every day.”

Their employer echoed that pride. Ian Makinson, of Ian Makinson Bricklayers, commented: “To have both of our apprentices win awards in their respective field is unbelievable, and I am so proud of them both!

“Competitions like this raise the bar for everyone in the trade. Both Alex and Isaac have shown real maturity and precision. It’s fantastic to see young talent being recognised. These events give apprentices a real chance to shine. We are all so thrilled for them.”

Mark Taylor, Director of School for Construction and the Built Environment says: “The standard was incredibly high across the board. Isaac and Alex’s success is a testament to their dedication and the strong partnerships that we have with local employers. We are so proud of both of them.”

Competitions such as the Guild of Bricklayers regional heats not only celebrate talent but also help shape the future of the industry, inspiring the next generation to aim higher and build better.

Both apprentices will now compete in the National Final on Thursday 5 June in Sunderland. We wish both apprentices the very best of luck!
