Preston College, in collaboration with 18 professionals currently working in various roles across the Health and Social Care sector, successfully hosted its first Health and Social Care Professions Day. The event, which took place on Thursday 13 March, offered over 150 Health and Social Care and Public Services students, as well as apprenticeships, the opportunity to explore diverse career pathways available in the sector, engage in interactive sessions, and gain valuable insights from industry experts.
The day was designed to help students understand the breadth of careers available within the sector, in well-known roles such as care workers, as well as less traditional roles. Students were also able to participate in practical and interactive sessions in key areas such as Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, A&E Nursing, Children’s Hospice Care, Addiction and Rehabilitation, Urgent Medical Care (First Response), Mental Health, RAF Medics, Care Homes, as well as sector volunteering opportunities.
In addition, students were able to gain first-hand knowledge and personal insight during Q&A sessions with industry professionals. The day concluded and students were able to use this new knowledge to consider their future career ambitions.
Sam Mckenna, Director of Business, Health & Uniformed Services, expressed her appreciation, saying:
“This event has sparked a growing interest in further engagement with employers working within these vital sectors, while also providing fantastic CPD opportunities for staff. The feedback from students has also been overwhelmingly positive, and we are keen to build on this success with more events like this in the future.”
She added: “I’d like to extend a huge thank you to all the employers who generously shared their time, knowledge, and experiences with our students, and a special thank you to the team for their dedication in organising such a successful and inspiring event.”
The Health and Social Care Professions Day reflects Preston College’s commitment to raising aspirations, promoting achievement, and strengthening industry links to support student success.
