Preston College Raises over £17,000 for Cancer Research in ‘Hope 52’ Challenge

Through the College’s ambitious ‘Hope 52 Challenge’, an incredible 52.2 mile 24 -hour endurance walk, Preston College staff, came together in an extraordinary show of resilience, community spirit and determination, to raise more than £17,600 for Cancer Research UK.

The 52-mile challenge, the equivalent of two marathons, was inspired by colleagues whose lives have been deeply affected by cancer, including some currently undergoing treatment. The walk set off from Haigh Hall in Wigan on Thursday 28 May, travelled through Clitheroe, the hometowns of two colleagues receiving chemotherapy, with an overnight walk through Longridge to conclude at Preston College on Friday 29 May.

Reflecting on the challenge, Vice Principal Mick Noblett said: “It is fair to say that we laughed, we cried, we stumbled, and we felt pain – but every individual who took part did so with courage, resilience, love and an incredible sense of community. This is something I will personally cherish for a very long time. More importantly, we have shown our support for colleagues affected by cancer and helped to make a real difference through the funds raised. It truly was an epic achievement.”

A range of distances were also introduced, including the Hope 26, Hope 10, Hope 5 and the College Mile, enabling staff of all abilities to take part and contribute to the cause.

Mick adds: “The response has been nothing short of phenomenal. With an initial fundraising target of £10,000, the College is proud to announce that this target has been significantly exceeded, reaching a total of £17,608.75 – a testament to the generosity, commitment and community spirit of everyone involved.”

The success of the challenge was made even more special by the incredible support received along the route. Local organisations and community groups came together to support participants, providing much-needed encouragement and refreshments at key stages of the journey.

A huge thank you goes to Asda Blackburn, who donated a trolley of refreshments, and to Great Harwood Primary School for opening their doors at the midnight halfway point, giving walkers a place to rest and recharge. We are also incredibly grateful to Longridge Cricket Club for also providing a warm and welcoming stop along the route, and FI Real Estate Management for their generous supply of breakfast barms, drinks and energy provisions that helped participants going throughout the challenge.

This outpouring of generosity from local organisations highlights the strength of the community surrounding Preston College and played a vital role in the success of the event.

The event brought together colleagues, volunteers and supporters in a powerful display of unity and college spirit, culminating in an emotional finish back on campus,

where participants were welcomed with cheers and applause from staff, family and friends.

More than just a physical challenge, Hope 52 has become a symbol of strength, solidarity and hope, demonstrating what can be achieved when a community comes together for a cause that matters.”

Donations are still being welcomed, and every contribution will help support Cancer Research UK’s vital work in improving outcomes and saving lives.

Cancer affects millions of people across the UK, with more than 423,000 new diagnoses each year and nearly 3.5 million people currently living with the disease. For many at Preston College, this is not just a statistic – it is something that has touched colleagues, friends and loved ones.
