Professional Construction at Preston College

Professional Construction will be one of our first T-Level qualifications.

T-Levels are innovative new courses, launched at Preston College in September 2021. The new vocational courses combine classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 45 day (315 hours) industry placement with a local employer to ensure you have relevant and real experience in the workplace. This new qualification has been developed with employers within the construction industry to ensure you learn the skills, behaviours and knowledge that will make you the most employable, now and in the future.

T-Levels are split into two parts; a core component and occupational specialisms which are specific to the Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning T-Level. During your core component you will develop a general understanding of the construction industry.

Topics covered include: health and safety, construction methods, building regulations and standards, the science behind building design, surveying and planning, digital engineering techniques and sustainability and the environmental impact of construction. You will also learn topics specific to design, surveying and planning including project management, budgeting, procurement and risk management.

Your choice of occupational specialism will allow you to develop the relevant skills in preparation for your career in construction.

GAIN REAL EXPERIENCE

80% of your studies will be within the College, this will be either in a classroom where you will build theoretical knowledge, or in one of our specialist building services facilities where you can develop your practical skills.

20% of the qualification will involve a 45 day (315 hours) industry placement with a local employer. During this time you will gain real workplace experience within the construction industry, placing you in a great position to progress into employment once you complete your T-Level qualification.

PROGRESS

T-Levels are equivalent to three A-Levels. Gaining a T-Level can help you with progression onto higher study, Apprenticeships or into skilled employment. Your T-Level will also be worth UCAS points. A T-Level at grade Distinction* is worth the same as three A-Levels at A* and will be recognised by universities and other providers, meaning you have the option to continue your studies after college.

The Construction: Design, Surveying and Planning T-Level is relevant to the following roles:

  • Civil Engineering Technician
  • Engineering Construction Technician
  • Technical Surveyor
  • Architectural Technician
  • Building Technician
  • Site/Project Management
