Preston’s College student, Susanne Knowles, has been awarded the prestigious Dean’s Award from the University of Derby; an annual award, recognising those students whose academic performance is in the top 10% within their respective school.
Susanne is now in the second year of her two year Foundation degree in Children and Young People’s Services at Preston’s College, which is accredited by the University of Derby. Susanne‘s recognition comes from her performance in the first year of her degree, which saw her overall achievement profile sit within the top 10% of the wider school of Arts, Humanities and Education.
Speaking, Susanne said: “Having worked as a Teaching Assistant and Learning Mentor for many years, I decided to challenge myself by enrolling onto the Children and Young People’s Services degree at Preston’s College. As a mature student, I felt both nervous and apprehensive about starting degree level education. However, my tutors were accommodating to not only my personal needs but also my learning style and abilities.”
Continuing, she added: “The tutors on the course quickly recognised my strengths and weaknesses and consequently built my confidence through constructive feedback, advice, praise and recognition of my commitment to the course. With their help and support, not only did I pass my course with a distinction, I received the Dean’s Award and am now thoroughly enjoying the second year of my two year programme.”
Marie Haworth, Vice Principal Quality Teaching, Learning and Learner Support at Preston’s College commented: “We are extremely proud of Susanne and her incredible achievement. Susanne’s commitment and dedication to the course, alongside a strong desire to learn and challenge herself was quickly recognised by her tutors and it is fantastic to see this continuous hard work being recognised.”
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Susanne was presented with her award at a prestigious virtual ceremony, held by the Dean, on 21st March 2021.
