The Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery is ideal for those with an interest in learning the basics about the subject, whether for home use or to kick-start a new career.

You do not need to be working in industry to undertake the qualification, the qualification enables you to demonstrate your skills, knowledge and understanding, within the realms of the training environment.

You will engage with a range of mandatory modules, learning the basics in a variety of subjects, from health and safety within construction to preparing and using relevant portable power tools and producing woodworking joints.

Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress onto the Level 2 qualification, if you wish.
 

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

As part of the Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery course you will study a range of modules, including:

  • How to carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information quantities and communicating with others
  • Building methods and construction technology
  • Produce basic wood working joints
  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools

The course is studied over 35 weeks on a part-time, evening basis. To successfully achieve the qualification you must complete every module and pass the practical simulation assessment or end of unit online assessment associated with each module.

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

As a carpentry and joinery learner at Preston’s College, you will perfect your skills in three purpose built workshops, all equipped with a full range of hand and power tools. Home to a variety of FESTOOL equipment, HEPA certified dust extractors and brand new, state-of-the-art advanced joinery manufacturing plant, including the 5 Axis CNC Machine – the only machine at a further education college in the country!

The nature of the course makes in ideal for those who are looking to take their first steps into the industry, with specific site and bench progression opportunities available upon successful completion.

This is a practical course, meaning you can expect to spend approximately two thirds of your time in the workshops, with the remainder of time being spent in the classroom, learning underpinning theory that ultimately supports practical tasks.

As our on-site facilities reflect industry working practices, you will be required to purchase and wear suitable PPE, including safety boots. In addition, you will need paper, pens, pencils and drawing equipment.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?

On completion of this qualification you will have obtained the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress on to a higher level qualification in the same or similar occupational area, for example, the Site Carpentry - Level 2 Diploma at Preston's College.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

In order to develop your technical skills, you will be required to purchase professional equipment including:

> Appropriate Safety Boots
> Paper
> Pens
> Pencils
> Drawing Equipment

All other equipment will be provided.
