The course is ideal for those wishing to persue a career in teaching dance in the private sector, learning the definitive link between creative and professional practice in performing arts. The course provides the option of training for a performing career in commercial theatre whilst gaining valuable teaching skills.

What will I learn?

First year modules include:

  • Preparing to Teach Dance in the Private Sector
  • Choreography
  • Teaching Dance: Preparing for the Private Sector
  • Health & Safety
  • Personal, Academic & Professional Development.

Second year modules include:

  • Practical Dance Teaching Skills
  • Technique & Choregraphy
  • Human Development & Safe Dance Practice.

You will also study two of the following:

  • Modern Theatre Dance Practice
  • Imperial Classical Ballet Dance Practice
  • Tap Dance Practice.

Some modules require students to gain placement within a dance school which the student is responsible for (inlcuding transport requirements).

How will I be taught?

Classes will combine practical sessions in our new dance studios and classroom theory. We have regular guests from the industry to provide students with first-hand experience of teaching dance professionally.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through practical examinations, observations and written assignments.

What can I do next?

For those wishing to continue with their studies, Preston’s College, in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire will offer progression to an honours degree.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Tuition cost: £6,000 per year. 

Kit & Equipment: You are required to purchase dancewear and books for various modules – a list will be provided upon successful audition. 

Other costs: If you wish to take examinations with the ISTD you will have the option to pay separately for any exams and/or registration fees. The cost of these depends on the level and genre of the exam and are set by the awarding body. There will be an additional £5 admin fee. Entrance to the exams is at the discretion of your tutors and will be discussed with you.

Entry Requirements

In addition to GCSE Maths and English and an Intermediate Dance qualification from a QCA recognised awarding body; places will be offered subject to a successful audition and physiotherapy examination.
